If I want to go to Los Angeles today I can get airfares from $1500, but if I want to go in July its $2600, October it back to under $2000 and down to $1500 again in November, same flight, same carrier, just different dates

This article (worth a read for anyone who buys tickets regularly) supports my understanding of one factor having an impact upon airline fare pricing.

Airlines will make a certain number of seats available in each booking class, and as the lower booking classes sell out, only higher fares are available. On some routes, though, airlines may keep selling heavily discounted fares on full flights (if they don’t think anyone will pay the higher rates).
