I think you have bigger problems than a 20yo defect.

If its valuable, it will need provenance.
There will be nothing stopping the previous owner or their descendants claiming ownership if you dont have an actual receipt. I suspect an auction house won't want anything to do with it based on that fact.

It's no different than if you had a valuable painting in your possession and couldn't verifying ownership.
Basically it will go back to the last known owner.
