Default Bragging Rights



There’s been a bit of debate on the importance of performance figures (i.e. 0-100 and ¼ mile times) with respect to the desirability of a vehicle. With this in mind, when purchasing a vehicle do ’bragging rights’ come into the buying equation, and if so in what way?

Pick as many as you want, they’re not mutually exclusive.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is what's most important from a purchasing point of view, is it just the performance numbers, or what else gives you that sense of pride.

It's gotta have good performance but doesn't have to be a top performer. Having 300+kw isn't particularly useful with todays draconian speed and traffic enforcement.

Most of all it has to be a good drive. That is comfortable, and fun if possible. Being a little different wouldn't hurt either.

Good performance and preferably a V8 are things I consider,
I also like the "rare" factor.

I like to take my car out for a leisurely drive and not see 20 of the same car

I've always had a Ford performance vehicle that is V8 powered, so am a bit biased in regard to this thread - reliability, performance, safety & braking are my pre-requisites when purchasing - keep in mind that every vehicle I've had get's only a tickle here and there to clean out the pipes, no dragging, mostly cruising.

originality. Even if someone else has one, it's not the same as yours. I buy my cars because I want to, not because ten of my buddies are screaming at me how quick it is. Chances are if I bought a GT I'd drive it the same as my XR6 and that isn't very fun at all. That's why I'm building a cheap fun burnout car, and just have my XR6 as a daily hack. No one ever talks me into buying something, my say is final.

I always buy performance cars criteria:
Must wear a blue oval or prancing horse (still waiting for horse)
Usually limited edition.
Must be something I desire to drive and like the look of.
Never bought a car for safety reasons.
1/4 mile times and 0-100 is irrelevant as with any performance car the figures depend on the driver and conditions you can easily make anything faster or stop better later.
The actual numbers achieved by journo's don't rate in my thinking half of them couldn't drive a ---------you get the idea. If it is a factory built performance car all the hard work has been done and it will be a good place to start. From there you tweek it till it suits you and what you want.

I think performance figures, whether official or from a mag or whatever, are particularly important and relevant - they're an indication of what the car is capable of. While I'd never choose car A over car B only because its a few 10th's quicker over the quarter, the performance figures make up a decent portion of the decision making criteria.

I buy what i want, always have, sports V8 variants with a Ford badge normally take my fancy regardless of the numbers 0-100 etc : :

My first car, and only car, is my MKII escort. And i bought it because I liked the look of it. Nothing else. I had no clue about escorts when i bought it. I will modifi it to make it quick enough and i will tweek all the other stuff to make it awesome. But really i love it cause when i go for a drive i get looks and no one else is in an escort. BEING INDIVIDUAL IS KEY.

Features, Reliability & Easy to repair when you have to....

I have been buying Fords for years for one main reason... Reliabilty!!!!
That gets proven year, after year with the number of Ford Taxis on the road.

Sure they are comfy, have great standard features, easy to fix and they dont cost an arm & a leg to fix either. Great all round car and with so many different models from base XT to GT-P what more can you ask for?

According to some reports Ford is looking to increase its spending in the V8Supercar Series. It made me think, although the race cars bear little in common with road cars, does Fords on track performance have any correlation with the decision to buy an FPV or Performance Ford? Would you be more likely to buy a GT/XR8 if Falcon won the Championship or the Bathurst 1000?
