I am always private and carefull with my cars, not giving out rego numbers and such.
The reason i am asking this is i just sold my front ba xr8 bumper on ebay, everything went sweet and smooth.Buyer contacted me and thanked me for packaging well. But now buyer is saying he/Vic roads is wanting a reciept with my full details, car Vin number and price. My reply to him was "what the!" ,you shouldnt need to go over the pits for a front bumper. The last thing i want is the id of my vehicle to get frauded. Does this sound like a normal Victoria roads thing? |

Maybe he bought it for a repairable write off? Im pretty sure you need to keep records/receipts of where parts come from these days.

The car is probably written off and he is getting a viv. Vic roads will need docs and want to find out where parts came from

VIN number for a car part....No way I would give it, tell him to jump.
A receipt for price & part description is the only legal requirement by law. If he needs number he can go to an engineering firm to get one as stated under VIC RTA guidelines. |

You can always ask him why he needs the vin.
As for receipts there needed for parts to prove that it's not stolen. You could also See if you can find the forms that he would need to fill in and work out why he needs all the info. |

The sale is finalized as far as im concerned, it wasnt even ment to be sold interstate as it was listed for pickup only.
I considering helping out but i didnt even know he brought a wreck xr8, part of me doesnt want to get involved in a pile of paper crap. I can see why he cant say it the original part that was not broken or repaired. I guess the damaged parts is documented? |

It does seem weird, maybe ask why he needs it. I wouldnt be all that concerned with VIN theft though, at the end of the day you own the vehicle with the VIN so you have all the proof you need.

direct from vicroads website
http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/...inspection.htm "Copies of the receipts will be retained by the VIV inspector. Receipts for substantial body parts (e.g. chassis rails, front or rear sections) must contain the VIN of the vehicle from which the parts were obtained. A VIV inspector may refuse to accept as evidence of repairs, a receipt provided by a licensed second-hand dealer that fails to reference the vehicle from which the parts were derived." |

A bumper bar isnt a substanial or structual part... if it was a front cut then yea... I would argue that its just a "cosmetic" part. Vic roads sounds more and more... um.. oh whats that word???

Which is talking chassis parts, front apron etc etc which are structural parts only, not bumpers bonnets/ bootlids etc etc. |

Would a front bumper fall under that description? "front sections" sounds very vague.

i bought some high series brakes off a BF2 turbo for my AU some time back, but i wanted to put new seals etc in the calipers, before i put them on, anyway to make a long story short, ford spare parts could not identify what seals to put in the pbr calipers, ............yes i tried all the brake places that i know of at the time, zero brake places had the seals :(.
my only option was ford parts :(, as i said even when i took the calipers in ford could not identify the correct seals(they gave me the wrong ones, i was told they needed the VIN NO ! which i then had to get from the seller, .........after all that they could not get them, did`nt know when they would have them, so in the end i got the seals made at a seal place. Is it possible the guy is after other parts matching that exact model because ford spare parts can`t decipher the correct part/s to go with what you sold him? |

With a repairable writeoff you are required to provide an invoice and Vin of the car that it came off for any and all parts, I guess it's up to you if you want to help him out with both, if not the part is unusable to him.
Of course it depends on the guy doing the engineering inspection if he requests them or not Last edited by ohzone; 04-09-2012 at 09:29 PM. |

I dont see what the problem is with the vin number its allocated to one car that would be yours, all states registries are linked if you try to register a car with the same vin as any other car in Australia it will be flagged and you (person presenting false vin) will be having to answer a lot of questions.
It would seem this person is trying to re-register a repairable write off maybe he has not got the money to buy a new GT335 and looks to ebay to rebuild a car so his family have transport? He bought a part to fix a car paid the price you asked didnt steal them or kick your dog on the way out and now has to deal with some red tape and beauracratic BS lets make life a bit harder for him Quote:

what harm can it do to give it to him, if he is getting a VIV, then he needs it, your Vin is open for anyone to see from your rego sticker anyway, well it is in Vic

Why does he need to do anything with viv just changing the front bumper? Is this one of those crazy vic roads things?
I don't see the harm in giving it to him - When people are selling cars the VIN is visible on sites like carsales.com.au so you can look it up and check its not stolen and stuff like that. |

Give him one from a car on Carsales! What if this guy bought a new genuine or aftermarket, no VIN there.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, anybody can just walk up to your car and get the vin off it if they wanted anyway
