My 10 yo son and his classmates are getting into yo yo's. This got me reminiscing about my old coke yo yo's in the late 70's early 80's. Has anyone here kept their old Coca cola yoyo's?
I'd love to see and show him some photos of them. |

Of course I do!!! They're on a display shelf right in my lounge room with other odds and ends...
The only ones that weren't mine from years ago during one of the crazes (it comes around every 5 years or so) are the very good condition 1970's Fanta and the Coke Super at the bottom right...I picked them up off Ebay for the ridiculous sum of just $8 by someone who obviously didn't know how hard it is to find a Fanta yoyo, let alone an old one. I bid on the auction just to get the Fanta one. Good quality ones will have a wooden axle in the middle. The others are pretty old, all genuine Russel yoyos. The top right and the bottom left are from the late seventies to early eighties, the well-worn Super in the middle top row is from the mid-eighties. I still have my original Championship Coke yoyo (not pictured), but it's so worn down on the side you can hardly see the printing. I had it at my last year of high school in 1980. It's actually a well-travelled yoyo...it is now sitting outside under the seat of my GSX-1400 with other bits and pieces in the document compartment, and spent years in the Gearsack bag on the back of every other bike I've owned...before I started riding it was in the glovebox of my cars. It has been through quite a few strings over the decades since I bought it and still gets whipped out now and then just for something to do. If you have a Leeds one, and it's in good nick, you're sitting on gold my friend...the yellow printing on them was known to be soft and wore away quickly, and usually in short order you ended up with a plain green yoyo with no printing on it. If you see a good one, snap it up. Older ones or hard to find ones can be worth real money... http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/coca-cola...#ht_515wt_1271 Mine will be getting mounted in a case to be put on the wall of the bar in the house we're buying. But I'll still keep out my old Super and still use it. |

Great stuff - remember in the 80's flicking it down hard to do walk-the-dog and copping back just as fast into the thumb or the inside of the wrist
The Championship ones spun faster and harder to get back up The guy at the bottlo gave me one of the 2012 olympic coca cola yo yos and I have been having a ball with it - memories

My mum and dad had a milk bar in Carlton when I was a kid, I remember the Japanese yo-yo champions performing out the front of the shop in 1971!

I just bought a full set of five London Olympic yoyo's on Ebay. Only paid $16.50 for the set.
Prices went a bit mad when they were first released...they were up to near $200 for a set, but then dropped just as sharply. I just bided my time and waited until there were plenty of sets of new ones on Ebay. I'm not trying to make a buck out of them...I just wanted a set for my display. |

Who remembers hitting themselves in the head or "downstairs" while trying to do tricks as well?
Or doing around the world and the string snaps... Not so good memories at the time...funny now but. There were thinner coke yo-yos I can remember as well. Have to clean out my cupboard and see what I have. |
