i was watching the new episode of Wheeler Dealers and Edd had a 'new' system to clean out the carbon from the pistons as well as the fuel system (injectors) and exhaust system (including cats).
They were fixing up a 10 year old Jaguar XKS. The cleaner takes over from the fuel system and runs fuel/Cleaner mix through the engine (while running). It clears out gum from the injectors and carbon build up from the combustion chamber and exhaust system. After running it for an hour, it's emissions were 50% improved and the monoxide reading was almost zero. He said it should restore it's performance and fuel consumption. anyone used it and did they get any kind of improvement? http://www.paramountperformance.com/...n-service.html

First, I havn't used it, that said, I have heard good reports about a product called REDEX which is used in a similar manner. Put in fuel tank and run, directions for use on the container. If there is heavy carbon build up in the combustion chambers, place 50 t0 100ml in each cylinder and allow to penetrate for 12 hours. Put waste rag over each spark plug hole and expel excess product by turning the motor over. Run the motor normally but do not be alarmed by the cloud of smoke when you first start it up. It will clear. By the way, REDEX has been around for many years.

beware sometimes the carbon build up is the only thing stopping it from burning oil. clean it up and it starts smoking. I remember some time ago the guys where I was working started flogging the diesel engine oil. this also cleans everything up and the guys with older cars all had blue smoke from the exhaust

Haha wheeler dealers is a great show and i to was quite amazed by that machine however it is a Tv show so I'm waiting for some more trustworthy results.
Personally I think regular servicing is much better then these so called Treatments but hey if your really worried try steam cleaning! Works wonders on lawn mowers

I put a can of Subaru "upper engine cleaner" through the old mans car, it starts pouring out massive amounts of white smoke out the exhaust for about 10 minutes then it clears up, works alright, supposedly gets all the carbon build up out.
You're supposed to put it in a vacuum line in the inlet manifold, I just sprayed half the can in the throttle body and let it sit for 30 mins, then started it, then once all the smoke cleared up, did it again. It doesn't ping under load anymore, so it must have done something. His car already burns a massive amount of oil though. |

Did the same as you, sprayed half a can down the throttle body. Carbon can form in the combustion chambers and form hot spots, which can get hot enough to create pre-ignition (pinging). Probably not a good idea using it in an engine with a million miles though, it will probably be more of an oil burner as already stated. |

Then I found out there is a Subaru service center 3km away from work.... I wasn't aware I could get it from Ford, I'll grab a few cans next time I'm there for service parts. |

be careful with some of these cleaners.
Quite a few years ago, ok a long time ago one of my neighbours thought he'd flush the engine using some sort of engine flushing chemical. When his engine started rattling he then got some friend to look at it for him. this friend couldn't fix it for him. Knowing I owned a engineering company he finally asked me over a few beers could I look at it. Being a good neighbour I did. He started the engine and I shouted to him to shut it off. he couldn't hear me over the noise so I grabbed the coil lead and pulled it off. We repaired the engine for him at cost and I can tell you it was totally stuffed, and I mean completely. We never did find out what he'd used but it crystallised the varnish on the inside of the engine and fed it all into the oil pickup. No oil, engine ruined. So be careful what you do and whatever you do read the instructions. |

E10 does much the same ..So does water injection..
Ever noticed how clean the cylinder is when a head gasket blows ??

in my younger days i would not have thought twice about the carbon cleansing , these days i think to my self does it just burn off, does most of it go out the exhaust valves , do some of the hard hard carbon particles remain and end up between the piston and the cylinder walls scratching up the bores, meh i think i`ll wait till head gasket/engine freshen up time and clean it up and maybe a port and polish at the same time.
