Default I’m sick of my current CD/MP3 collection - Enlighten me

Well, I've come to the decision i need more music.

Im into stuff like

Iced Earth, Dream Theater, Pink Floyd, Opeth, The Haunted, Manson, Cradle of Filth, Empror, Pearl Jam, Dio, Metallic, Pantera etc. So basicaly "Soft Metal" or atmospheric black metal.

So, does anyone have fav bands within this general genra, or can even suggest bands outside this genra who may appeal.

I'll go and buy CD's of the suggestions. :evil_laug

Led Zeppelin. I have all their music. IMO no one has ever approached their unique sound, really good. Gotta be one of my favourite, if not my favourite band ever.

Got some good bands listed in your post.. Pink Floyd...

You have some great bands listed there Walkinshaw, particularly Pink Floyd and Dream Theatre! I'm listening to butt loads of Rolling Stones, Tom Petty and Talking Heads at the moment, but for your tastes I would highly recommend a band named Full Devil Jacket. Anyone know what happened to this band? They released their first album in 2000 then disappeared off the face of the earth. Also check out UPO, I think you'll like both of these bands. UPO's album titled No Pleasentries is awesome.

I'd suggest getting into some funk, and the good stuff with various sounds. Anything from rage against the machine, to red hot chilli peppers, to tower of power. All have some really "grooving" music, but than, i'm a drummer and funk appeals to me more then it does to others.....

Okay, worst rock band ever.

I agree with your second paragraph, I really enjoy the earlier Red Hot Chilli Peppers (Blood Sugar Sex Magic was their best in my opinion, and went severely downhill from there). I'm a drummer too, which is probably why that sort of groovy, funky music appeals to me.

I'm still waiting to be enlightened.....

Well said about RHCP's BSSM album, it is the renowned "must have" album for all drummers. The music since than is good, but more pop oriented rather than funk.

I need to start listening to dream theather on the basis of how much I love watching Mike Portnoy crank it out on the kit, just awesome. I have a top DVD with many of the current greats doing 10 minute straight drum solos, it's bloody great.

Actually, maybe you should take up a musical instrument. It will bring you to a new level of appreciation of what you already listen too and also help to open your mind to genre's you've never been interested in!

I think Live would fit your collection - best bet would be to get their best of though.

Have you also considered Joy Division/New Order, Franz Ferdinand, The Killers

If you like the older stuff I'd also say the Clash

A few good bands there, I went to Opeths last concert in Melbourne and have all 7 albums I also have all Cradle of Filths albums including demos.
Try: My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, Amorphis (later stuff), Anathema, Susperia,
System of a Down, Type O Negative, Dimmu Borgir, Satyricon, Bathory,
Devin Townsend \ Strapping Young Lad and if you like chick vocals: Theater of Tradgedy, Flowing Tears, Within Temptation.
Just a few.

Wow, some there I had forgot all about, but used to listen to all the time! And how did I forget to suggest Fear Factory? :

I guess it all depends on your personal taste, what sort of riffs you like, what style of drumming, etc.

I'm going to have to check out some of the other bands in this thread

I forgot Machine Head and Fear Factory - these would probably suit Walkinshaw as well. Ministry and Nine Inch Nails less so. NIN is great.

If you dont have the S&M album done by Metallica and the Orchestra, you're missing out on a HELL of a lot. Even if you dont like Metallica, if you have a good appreciation for music, you'll love this.

Nickelback is great.

Umm, try another genre? No wonder you're bored with it, if all you listen to is one style then you are guaranteed to get f@rken sick of it after a while. Hell, I grew out of metal (death/grind mainly) when I was still a kiddie at school! :

I agree with Mr Sparkle, widen your horizons. Being eclectic means you are unlimited in your appreciation of all music genres, plus it means you can always find something new on a P2P program.

Go on, try something different. You might be pleasantly surprised.
