Heh, looks like I did well with your $3.95/minute offer!

Dan, did you draw a chilled carcass on your script book? I drew a moo-cow in mine when I had an ozone question to answer

Dezza: good luck with it mate.

First one (COMS4100, Advanced Digital Communications) on the 15th, day after origin, I'm not a happy chappy. Owen, I've got a mate who did fluid mech last semester, not sure what the course code is tho, but I could see if he's got some old tutes solutions etc if you're desperate.

Does anyone else here get given assignments to do OVER THE EXAM PERIOD by a lecturer who can't get his shit together over the semester? :

Oh, another thing. I've had a class this semester which was a project class, where there were no actual lectures or tutes, and now we've been informed that there will be a generic exam based on ethics, construction practices, and contracts. WTF? These have nothing to do with my project (concept/design)!!!

Monash University has got to be the worst institution ever. I cannot wait to leave this absolute hole of a supposed campus. It's more like a camp. Camp X-Ray.

Sucks being in the guinea pig year for a new course too (a course which hopefully will be ACCREDITED by the time I graduate). I don't see why a course based on soil & fluid mechanics should be concerned about the Iraq war, national parks, or the ozone, but they're part of the curriculum! (Civil/Environmental engineering)

I initially joined as part of another course, Civil/Electrical engineering, but we were informed that that course had gotten written off. Being told this news fifteen minutes before our first exam was about to start was a bit unsettling.

University is about profit these days, not education.

Damn, they're stopping the environmental/civil? Well that lasted long. Dave, I have to agree that Monash are a bunch of tools. After Monash forced me to move from Gippsland to Clayton due to the closure of the Gippsland eng department (except for Civil/Environmental), I have found it hard to settle into a course in which students are expected to be smarter than their Gippsland counterparts. We pay ridiculous fees and still get useless lecturers who can hardly speak English. I have an Indian lecturer that even one of my Indian friends (do you remember Shikah?) can't even understand.

I had a great timetable in first year, all compressed into 4 days. Now, despite running a straight Electrical Eng degree (not a double degree), I have had countless problems with my timetable. From 8.00 starts at uni, through to clashes, I have had huge problems trying to get the ideal timetable. Rather than 4 full-on days of uni, I have had 5 days full of 2,3, and 4 hour breaks, with nothing I could do to fix it. They charge about $80 per year to park at uni (which is why I go for the free parking 20 minutes away), and send out the enrolment fees BEFORE I've even finish enrolling! They could at least wait to the semester starts.

The food on campus is crap and overpriced. I even got sick from it last week! Overall, Monash only care about money, it shows in the whole Gippsland eng closure and the way they handled it. Thanks to all the protesting, we managed to get a compromise and didn't get completely shafted. If they had their way, we would have all been shifted to Clayton with no financial assistance (basically a don't sue Monash money package), and would have been expected to perform right from the moment we arrived at Clayton. If I had my time again, I would never have chosen Monash as my first preference.

Nah mate, Monash is certainly about profit... this is my 5th year being there, and they've replaced services/carparks for students with shiny new buildings...

Came to the realisation back in first year when we had a biology prac, each person was supposed to experiment with 20 plant seeds, but guess what? We had to share 15 seeds between three of us. Cheapskate university couldn't even afford enough plant seeds for all of us to use.. *sigh*

Monash isn't too bad though, apart from being in the middle of nowhere, everything here seems to be pretty much the same with other unis around Melbourne.

How many Monash students does it take to change a lightbulb?
Two. One to change the bulb and one to complain about how if they were at a better school, the lightbulb wouldnt go out.

Sorry, couldn't resist :p

You got sick, mate? Where did you buy the food at? The free parking is pretty cool eh - that's if you can find a spot. It's half as big as what it was before the synchotron was built.

I bought it at HG under the library. I can't say it was the healthiest food, but that is the first time fish & chips have made me sick. Yeah, go free parking! I always seem to find a spot. Probably because 10.00am was my latest start.

donno: The lightbulb joke wouldn't work for Monash, because they would either simply not have the money for a replacement, or they'll spend the money instead on repainting a disused toilet in a rather liberal colour such as lavender.

Dezza: LOL Shikah rocked! Nah, Civil/Env isn't getting written off (yet), but last year 30 students with eligable ENTER scores applied, but they only allowed five or six in. Where's the logic in that? The Civil/Env course hasn't been fully accredited yet: This milestone "should" become reality when myself and Owen (remember Owen?) graduate, since we're the only final year students, and there have not been any graduates yet. We've been guinea pigs for this course since 2004.

Next semester for me consists of environmental chemistry, forest management, plus two road engineering subjects. I can't see how shoving all the road engineering subjects into the last semester will be beneficial at all!

The bestest thing about the Civil/Env course? The old Civil/Electrical course was under the ENGINEERING banner, where we'd have six classes per semester and HECS fees of $400 per class. Under the Civil/Env course, it's been put under the SCIENCE banner, where we have four classes per semester and HECS fees of $680 per class (and rising). That's fantastic!

Apart from the above, the three low points of my course have been these:

* Attending class where we watched slides of the lecturer's holidays to California in the 1970s. Slides!!! FFS

* Attending a different class where we watched a video (narrated in French) documenting the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1988 or whenever it was.

* Discovering I'd failed a class I was certain I had passed, and when I confronted my lecturer over this it was revealed that he had made an error and that I had indeed passed, and another student had failed instead.

I feel sorry for the 1st year students, they've got to go through all this!

I don't think I remember Owen. As for Shikah, he still rocks. Only Shikah would go into the Monash computer labs and look up porn! He went and got wasted after one of his exams last week, even though it wasn't his last exam. He went to the pub with Tim and Glenn (a.k.a. Jesus) who were also from Gippsland. I didn't know there was only two of you doing that course. Does that mean there are only 2 in the class? At Clayton, they've been changing the degree as well. They are going from 6 4-credit-point subjects to 4 6-credit-points subjects. Currently 1st and 2nd year are 6 credit points. Next year, 3rd year will make the change. Anyone doing 3rd year subjects (like what I am) are getting a bit nervous about failing stuff because it means mixing 4 and 6 credit point subjects next year.

LOL at the stuff ups. Good thing you confronted the lecturer!

ahahaha "Jesus" <-- awesome!

Well, Owen & I are the only two in final year. There are about 10 3rd year students and 6 2nd year students.

We all look up porn at uni now, no-one cares anymore. It's more apathy than rebellion.

We pay semesterly amenities fees still, but we don't even have coffee/tea/sugar anymore. I haven't been into the library once this year, and computer access has only been required for one class (for three tutorials) this semester, so I'm not sure where exactly that $280 of fees goes to...

Regarding hot drinks, I've taken to simply walking into the science staffroom with a mug from home & making myself a coffee in front of random lecturers who I don't know, then walking straight out again. Seems to have worked for me so far!

I'm in whinge mode tonight! Someone pass me a tea-cozy.
