It has been done before, one of the best modern conversion of a Mk II however I have not heard of anyone managing to do a Mk I. As far as I know it should be theoretically possible. Mmmmm Twin Cam 16V fuel injected 2.0 Escort!!

I know of 2 road-going Mk 1 Escorts with zetecs. The owners are pretty coy about giving out too much info as they are not registered with zetecs. There are a few guys in the RSOCVIC undergoing conversions at the moment.
They are fairly easy to convert as they have the same gearbox bolt pattern as the standard kent and pinto motors. You have to run without a brake-booster or relocate to. The water rail, coil pack have to be related and a you have to get a water pump that rotates the opposite way to standard. There are kits you can buy in the uk but they are expensive. Allow for engineering! I'm planning on putting one in my Mk 1 van....eventually. |

Am doing one at the moment... Bought the engine intending on fitting it to my Mk2 about 7 years ago!... Now going to be fitted into my Mk1 when I get around to doing it :P

And yes they do conversions that fit twin 45mm webbers and he can mod the top engine cover to make it look like a BDA motor

Or they can fit carby with a throttle body setup so you can have it fuel injected with the old school carby look. It looks, sounds and goes fantastic

Noice! Does anyone know how much the Zetec weighs compared with the Pinto or kent engines? Or 4AGE, SR20 etc... (they have a weight handicap added because the Toyota & Nissan badges weigh a lot lol)

agreed whooligan LOL..... outback ute as far as I have been told the zetecs are alot lighter than an SR20 and lighter than the pinto! but as for the toyota and kent I don't know?

Pinto is about 130kg, Zetec is about 80kg and crossflow is about 65-70 iirc

As the zetec is no longer fords main stream small ford engine I am going the Duratec route this year. Duratec 2.3. Bellhousing are available for the the Type 9 five speed.

undecided weather to go zetec or duratec or BP1800t in my RS the engine is ready to be lifted.
will decide in the next few weeks,then the games begin. Duratec are a bit costly atm |

I understand that comment if you where in the game of keeping your car original or concourse if it came with a pinto. But if you want to drive your escort every day and have big horsepower you can't do this with a pinto and expect to drive it in traffic. You have goto go with a twincam. Duratecs have been in the states for three years now we should start seeing them coming in quite cheap. 140bhp standard is excellent, 203bhp with injected DCOE throttle bodies no problems. Engines can with stand 245bhp with no internal changes just inlet and exhaust. I have been watching fowles and pickels auctions Mazad3 SP23 are coming up smashed quite allot, does anybody have any experience with the prices that damaged vehicles go for at these auctions.

bhempstead - Hey mate, I agree. I have owned a Focus with a Zetec engine and it was all good, though a little asthmatic in standard trim. But the potential is there for sure!
I am only supporting the cast iron anchor of a Pinto engine because I have four of them, they power my rally car and RS2000. They are heavy, primitive, and a pain in the butt (you can't even change the camshaft without removing the head or engine). They don't want to stay running when cold, are hard to drive at low speeds (well when modified a fair bit), and aren't the most beautiful engine around. But they are as part of an Escort as it's rally heritage, and I love them. So yes, I agree with your statement completely, but they power my Escorts, and it's part of the classic car that I love. Having heard an RS1600 in anger at last year's Rally of Melbourne, not too many other 4 cylinders sound good by comparison!
An interesting bit of info I picked up talking to the guy at the Small Ford Sunday who was building the Capri track car with an Escape 3L Duratec V6 is that the all-alloy V6 weighs a touch less than a Pinto. |

Lucky I took a photo hey? The V6 is obviously wider, a bit shorter and about the same height. In an Escort the brake setup would need to be changed, I think the water pump needs to be moved (it is at the back of one of the cam covers and would hit the firewall), and the oil filter needs to be moved to fit an engine mount - the Capri had a remote-mount unit.

Gidday all,
I am in the process of fitting a Zetec to my MK2 Lotus Cortina. Why !! Ok I will explain, firstly to introduce myself, I'm a retired Motor Engineer, racer, engine builder, car builder general nut case being 61 years young. My Twin Cam produces 158Hp on 40mm's, ok for road use but only just although my wife drives it. anymore power and it will be a pig on the road and the cost of TC bits is getting crazy. To build one to 160Hp would cost $10K, So if it dies, well I will probably lay down beside it. So an alternative, three years or so ago I bought a 1.8 import Zetec engine for the LC, it bolts up to the 2000E box, is about the same size within a poofteenth, and the sump drop is to the rear and it's a Ford. Nuff said. I have fitted 1.5mm larger inlets, cleaned up the ports, 11/1 CR, Hydraulic Waggott cams, 45mm Webers anda bunch of Bananas. I have made the inlet manifold, extractors, turned a steel flywheel, a water rail and a heap of other items. Why, because I can and it cuts the cost right down. The whole unit ows me less tan $3000 and should show close to 200HP. So, it will fit into a 'scort with no chopping or cutting. The sump would have to be cut and reversed to a front drop. A replacement flywheel is required as the Z unit is a minuture Mack truck item. If left stock then use the original ECU. See ya, Les |

what sort of money are you lookin at for a zetec into mk1 or 2 escort? since i dont have the talent to do it myself..id imagine a fair bit. i want a mk2 escort so i can ditch my v8 commodore since i want to get into hill climbing and well lets say commodores arnt renowned for their ability to turn corners! (or for their fuel economy, braking ability, build quality and so on..)

not bad wen you fitted the alloy v6 wat rwd gearbox you use? i've got a mk1 escort with a 2L zetec in it fully certed and road legal it wasnt to hard but i want to put a duratec v6 outta mondeo or escape or something into a mk2 cortina any ideas would be good
