Default Countries that never made a car....

Hi all,

A slightly odd question for you all- I am interested to find out what European countries never produced a car......Scotland for one even though they invented tarmac roads and the pneumatic tyre!

List is thus so far: If you spot a mistake, let me know!

Scotland
Wales
Belarus?
Liechtenstein
Slovenia?
Norway?
Denmark?
Finland?
Serbia?
Croatia?
Moldova?
Macedonia?

Question marked ones I am unsure of ( some used to be Ugoslavia in which case they did make cars)and if anyone can add what they did make there, I'd be happy to correct it!

Thanks in advance, Jamie

Belarus is actually a state of russia if memory serves ie belarus = "Belarussia"

Russia has got a few cars, most notable was the 'zil'... a HUGE limmo of 2 or 3 tones!

This may be wrong, im just thinking out loud!

Interesting topic however

A lot of these countries produce cars under contract for other companies such as Nissan, Renault, etc but don't know of any home grown cars.

Thats right...Spain make the Seat which is not much more than a rebadged fiat but has evolved into a marque in it own right so I thought that would count...Portugal on the other hand....?

Amended list:

Scotland
Wales
Liechtenstein
Slovenia?
Norway?
Denmark?
Finland?
Croatia?
Macedonia?
Andorra

Been owned by VW since 1990 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SEAT

I correct the record only because we have one in the family and it's embarrassing enough without being aligned with Fiat ;)

edit: get dates right

Sure... just trying to back away from the Fiat association.

From wiki
"SEAT has its manufacturing facilities in Martorell, an industrial town close to Barcelona. The development facilities are some of the newest in the Volkswagen group. For example, the development and design of the Audi Q7 took place there.

SEAT, instead of being a mere part of VW, develops its own designs. Every year, its improvements make its cars a new standard for the European automobile industry, in fact, the Seat Leon has been recently recognized by the German press as the most competitive model of the year, wining the award against other cars like VW Golf, Skoda Octavia and Audi A4"

I wonder what "the most competitive model of the year" means, lol.

Hahahaha!! I 2nd that!! If they were Fiat ownwd they would have gone the way of the dodo ages ago for building utter unreliable crap. Thank god they're under VW. As for Fiat still being Italian owned, I dunno what's worse, that or being part owned by GM as they were. They may as well be owned by Toyota or Honda so they can actually make cars properly, but then I doubt either would invest money in a sinking ship! :

If Toyota or Honda bought them they'd only get worse.

Its interesting that the "sinking ship," Fiat is turning profit... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiat Whilst companies like, oh, Ford? Are not.

Scotland did my Hillman is made in Scotland, assembled in Melbourne but made in Scotland using English parts. In fact the Hillman Imp was regarded at Scotland's own car.

Assembled by raving mad scotish labour after being forced by the government to build a plant in scotland as opposed to the English midlands. It sent the company broke, but the cars were pretty well made.

I am pretty sure Ireland never made a car either. The Delorean was made in the north if memory serves rightly. We did invent Guinness though...

Scotland has oiver the years had several small private hand made car companies.. google confirms this. Most of the places like Finland are much the same .

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gilbern
Quote:
Gilbern cars were made in Llantwit Fardre, Pontypridd, Glamorgan, Wales between 1959 and 1973.

Gilbern Sports Cars (Components) Ltd was founded by Giles Smith and Bernard Friese and was one of the few cars to be made in Wales. The first car, the GT Mk 1 was initially available with either Austin-Healey Sprite or Coventry Climax engines and attractive 2+2 coupe bodywork. The chassis was fabricated from steel tubing and front suspension was initially from the Austin A35. Later versions came with a B-series MGA or MGB engine and coil sprung BMC rear axle. In 1966 a larger upmarket model, the Genie appeared, with 3 litre Ford V6 power. This in turn led to the Invader with improved chassis. The Invader was available as a complete car and an estate version was also made. The cars were expensive for the time and production ceased in 1973.

I would have thought all countries would have produced A car brand over the years. How big they were is another question.
