why do people care ?
i see in a couple of threads that people are sometimes getting the brownies because somebody else has a HIGH POST COUNT or is posting comments of little or no substance and then getting hammered for it. i had no idea it was a competition ? Is there some kind of award/prize... who thinks post count is irrelevant as i do? who takes pride in their post count?.. i dont who gives a ____? MODS CAN THIS BE MOVED TO BAR WHERE IT BELONGS ... SORRY!

Well, I care for one. Whilst I don't mind off topic posts, some people seem to take pride in posting drivel and continuing on with posts for as long as possible without actually contributing anything to ... anything.
ahhh... time for my morning valium I think .................... |

Seriously, there is MSN or IRC for banter and such stuff.. there is no need to fill up forum space with it. If a few people concentrated on Quality rather than Quantity, then there wouldn't be the need for this thread : You are welcome : Quote:

Erm, are you the same guy as Dez? I think this thread alone proves you are a post whore. That, and your excessive number of posts in a relatively new forum. I really don't care much, as I spend little time in the boring off-topic forum, stopping only for the occassional joke thread or checking out strange websites, and you sure as hell won't find me in the 6 or 4 cylinder boards.
If you aren't Dez (which I suspect you aren't) then I've never actually seen you being accused of post whoring, but this thread is still useless. I just thought you were Dez because of your name (I think Dez owns a TX3??). Last edited by Mike Gayner; 15-05-2005 at 11:55 AM. |

Can i kindly direct you to the area just under my avatar that says post count 150 or so which is roughly one third of yours....im not DEZ, bit of an oversight, thats ok. In the mean time i thought this place was for ford enthusiasts to gather, meet and associate or "hang out" with other like-minded individuals? i hadnt realised that you guys looked down so much on general chit chat? The purpose of my post is to establish a general understanding about whats expected of our members and why. to be honest im a little dissapointed with the response. i was expecting something a little more positive.

If we just stuck to talking about the cars we have and love I doubt as many members would have met or have become friends. Mike's comment about not finding him reading anything to do with 4's or 6's would mean that I wouldn't even know that he existed, because that's what I own and love. And no, I don't give a stuff about my post count.

XAcoupe is right its quality over quantity. The main thing I like to see with posts is that there was at least some kind of thought went on before the actual posting. Does the post count serve any purpose? The only valid reason I have heard is that it identifies a posters involvement, but it only shows the quantity of posts not the quality of thier content. You only find that by reading the content. I'd like to see the Post Counts public visibility removed with it only accessible to the ops/admins. It would take away most of the post whore incentive. |

Some people seem to forget this is a car forum, not Chat or a MSN converstion.
Input and constructive c&c is good but imho some people comment on way too much. Look at the post count in the Bar (non automotive chit chat) it is 11 000 post higher than the Pub... That says alot considering FF.com.au isn't 6 months old yet. We all got alittle carried away with the release of our own forums but I hope the junk fades and the car chat goes on strong.

Most of the 11,000 extra posts are due to useless threads like the 'what are you listening to' and 'the song games'. Whenever I need a laugh there is usually something worth reading in the bar so it's not all bad I don't care about my post count because i'm not here enough to compete with the whores lol |

It certainly says something about this car forum (and it's members) when the busiest part of the forum is the part that has nothing to do with cars...

I don't know it is possible with this forum lay-out but other forums break the post count into "Off-Topic" and " General Posts".. I guess that gets back to what Red was saying re:- the post count "the only valid reason I have heard is that it identifies a posters involvement, but it only shows the quantity of posts not the quality of thier content."
If i was a newbie on here and saw a very high count for example, i would think that person knows a thing or two about Fords.. Unfortunately that is not always the case. Now i am sure most people have the intelligence to figure out spammers from the enthusiast, but I wonder sometimes if they can be bothered.

166! woohoo go me!
I don't really care about the post count thing, but sometimes i think it's good to suss the credibility of someones comment, though can't be taken too seriously (i.e. someone giving advice on an EB might do most of their posting in the AU section). Handy sometimes though.. but then i've only got 166 posts...so what i think doesn't matter :P -Stu Last edited by dogbreath_48; 15-05-2005 at 09:56 PM. |

Exhibit (A) Your Worship ...... of Post Whoring Dan
Maybe we will look at removing the post count. Until recently it hasn't bothered me as being new I expected some exuberance and also that it would die down ... unfortunately some people are addicted to it. Last edited by XA-Coupe; 15-05-2005 at 01:40 PM. |

I havent really seen that much of a problem on this site. There are a few people who post things non stop, especially in the show and shine section but if the owner putting the pictures up didnt want comments then they wouldnt post pictures in the first place. I have a feeling most of my posts that are crap and not car related is just general discussion in the E series forum. I dont feel like I am posting things just for the sake of posting things but I have got a high count. But then again I am also online a lot more than most people as I always have the forums on in the background when I am at work. The issue has only been raised because someone mined a thread that was pretty old just so he could make a clever comment. Thread mining should be banned!

Perhaps threads could be automatically locked after a certain time, say 1 month after the last post in it? Oh, and while we're at it, I wouldn't consider myself a post whore...

yeh see theres a difference between 'post whoring' and 'talking about non car stuff'
the latter very much does have a place on this site. until fordforums au advertises it self as a place of technical info and only car talk, there has to be a place where people with something in common(ford lovers) can talk about stuff that they dont have in common. its just that people happen to talk about everything else more than the single subject of cars. to me that makes sense. *EDIT i think *EDIT what this thread is about is jsut that there are post whores who waste space on threads, traffic charges charged by websites hosts, and their post count goes up while someone with a small post count might well ahve contributed more technical car info to the site. conclusion? to me.. i wont judge a persons knowledge purely on how many posts they're posted. thats merely an indication of how much they talk. and im glad i can see peoples post count(especialy when combined with join date). I played 'The Song Title Game' for quite some time, until it got off-track once too often, and I got sick of people posting whatever came to mind, just to keep it going, so I stopped. I've also posted in 'What Are You Listening To', but that was soley to promote my internet radio station. I do see, however, that many use these threads as a way of boosting their count, as theymay see it as some kind of social status. That is something you may never stop. Personally, I keep forgetting that the post count is there, as I don't generraly look there, except for the username of whoever posted in, or created a thread.
