Gday just wondering if any one can help me with a problem, i absolutly love V8`s and i am going to be gettin my P`s soon and already have my XD ute with a 351 in it, they have now brought out these new restrictions against P platers and now i am going to have to sell it.
Now that iv advertised it and just had a drive in it i wish this wasnt wat has to happen, iv left school and am workin as a concreter and will need a ute, Iv been catchin public transport for ages and sick of missing those buses lol, Does any one know of any ways i can still drive it on my P`s. Iv heard you can get your employer to write a letter, I get my P`s in september so the restrictions apply. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Brad. |

Apply for a exemption. If its your only car, you need it for work, you have a good driving record and references, then you may be allowed to keep it. I did that with my employer, so give it a shot.

Put 4.1 badges on it. Act dumb when/if you get caught.

You should be able to get an exemption for owning it before the laws came in too?
You can do that in NSW |

is it registered as a 351?
register it as a 302 if not, put 4.9/302 badges on it (including the 4.9/302 stickers and whatever under the bonnet) so it looks correct, and claim thats what u thought is was all along if questioned. the only way they will ever know is if they pull the sump off, and not even an insurance company will do that. i drove a 302 XE on my P's (all be it years ago, but the 1st round of P plate restrictions were in back then) and i never got hassled. i think the reason was that it was quiet, clean and tidy, and i didnt drive around like it was qualifying day at bathurst. mates of mine had mainly V8 HQ-Z holdens and commodores, and 1 other mate had a V8 XC. the couple of them that drove like knucleheads got all the wrong attention (and got a reputation for doing so, so the police kept an eye out for them...) and the rest of us just kept to ourselves, didnt cause hassles, and got left alone. i do remember being grabbed 1 day by a TOG/TMU guy 1 while i was out in the old mans XY ute that had a very healthy 351 windsor in it. all he was interested in was that it sounded nice while being quiet, and wanted to see what it had in it and done to it because he was building 1 himself!! |

Well, I'm afraid our past and present P platers have ruined it for you.
Looks like you'll have to sell it. |

Rather than losing a considerable amount of money on a vehicle you obviously like why not just pull the 351 out and put in an alloy head six, it would probably only cost you $1000.00 and you can put the 351 in the shed for later. Although, I'd be applying for an exemption first.
Regards, Tote

Changing badges, and trying to deceive insurance companys as well as the police isnt the smartest move. Its not worth it. What if he crashed into a new Mercedes? Not knowing is like negligence, and only a special needs person wouldnt know the difference between a 351ci motor and a 4.1 litre 6 cylinder **** box.

I did a qoute over the internet for just car insurance and it was about $3300, it was more than i paid for my car.
With an alloy head six can you get abit of power out of those without spending to much money because its on gas and petrol at the moment and i would like to keep it on gas for money reasons mainly. |

I hate to be the rain on this parade but if you drive that vehicle unlawfully YOU ARE UNLICENCED and if you have an accident that is NOT your fault, e.g. someone runs into you and someone gets hurt you might find yourself a LOT of shyte.
Playing dumb and having 4.1 badges is about as smart as having a MPH speedo and using that as a defence against a speeding fine. Just because you don't like a law does not make you exempt from it and this sort of thread is just the type of thing the the Harold Scroobys of the world save to use as evidence of how motor enthusiests are actually unlawabiding antisocial criminals. If this thread was about how to bend gun laws to get a pistol or how to buy components to make drugs you would all be jumping up and down but in the eyes of the law what you are talking about is no different..... |

Someone is on their high horse. Fair enough warning him of the consequences of driving it, but he never said that he intended to in the first place. He was worried that he would have to sell it so was enquiring if there was any way around it. He is just one person suffering an unnecessary cost due to the new laws that I believe should not have been introduced in the first place. Give the guy a break because he is trying to do the right thing and you jump on your high horse and compare it to illegally buying a pistol?? WTF is with that? |

What Flappist stated needed to be said, and didn't seem aimed as insulting to the OP, rather warning him away from the mandatory stupid posts that always find thier way into threads. xd_brad: As stated already give the exemption thing a try. If your employer and a parent are willing to go to bat for you then who knows. In your line of work get something from the boss stating that the ute is necessary to carry equipment from site to site (probably likely the truth anyway). Failing that, make other arrangements that won't get you banned from driving, or even prison time down the track.

He asked a question. There were several rather stupid replies. Just in case he actually thought he would get away with it I pointed out graphicly what could happen. As you are only a child (26yo) you would not remember what gun ownership in Australia was like before 1996. At that time almost EVERYONE owned guns of all types and buying a pistol or auto rifle legally was easier than getting a motorbike licence. The laws changed, just like the P plate laws now. Many spewed about it, just like the P plate laws now. Many said get stuffed, I will do what I like, just like the P plate laws now. Many got into a LOT of trouble, some even jailed.......... The mere fact that you think that driving unlicenced is totally different to unlicenced posesssion of a handgun shows you have no concept of how the legal system works and how laws are applied to the general public... |

I do know what the gun laws were like. All of my family members owned guns. But that is not the point. Just to remind you of what he actually said. Quote:

My original comment was not aimed directly at the thread opener, if it were I would have quoted him as I quote you now. My comment was directed generally at those whose attitude is "the law sucks so I will not comply". Respect and credibility on AFF are earned over a period of time and a number of posts. If you wish to be treated with respect then the first thing you must do is treat others the same way, unless of course the others attack you first in which case treat them as they treat you....... |
