Australia wasn't the only country hit by recession - it was a bit more widespread than that. Without some slowing of the economy, inflation would have gone through the roof. As to whether Keating put the brakes on the economy for too long, that's another story.

We'll all remember the recession of 2009 if things go AWOL later this year. ;)

Australia'a biggest problems will hit when China and India's economies start to slow down, and they will. Then we will see what depth the Australian economy has and how much effect governmet policies and economic handling has really had.

I was a 3rd year automotive mechanic the dealer ship I worked for (just up the windsor road form baulkham hills) went bust, I got in to heavy equipment, best thing that ever happend to me I learnt that all this leading edge technology is about 10 years behind the heavy industry I also learnt that even though its no harder or heavyer the pay is much better once your out of your time, I'm glad it all happend but things were very grim at the time.
As for other people I know my dad was 45 at the time and it was an employers market so finding a job for a 45yo mechanic wasnt easy, so he desided to start doing work from home to cover the bills, then he got busy, so he put in a hoist, then one thing led to another he got to busy and to many people kept coming at inconvenant times so he now has a work shop and things couldnt be better for him

Good to see a future fund being set up now during the good times. No different to a person; if you save some during the good times you will have some for a rainy day. The biggest risk is another government will come in and spend it then when that rainy day comes....
