This is Beck, girlfriend of Matt. We had a game of pool last night and we had a disagreement about the rules.
What happened: I hit nothing with the white ball, so he got two shots. He then pocketed a ball, then his next ball did not sink in a hole. He says: His extra shot gets carried over, and he gets to have another go at it. I said: No way! You lose it! One person agreed with him, TWO people agreed with me! What do you say??? |

I say he still had the extra shot fair and square.
When i played the rule was you sink on the first it cancels it out, but that should be decided before you start.

Two shots is a queer Victorian rule. I grew up on Sydney rules with no two shot crap. Anywayz, in your case I believe it's forfeited once you sink the ball. But like the 'can I shoot backwards or not after you pot the white' rule, decide beforehand as EA2BA said.

If you stuff up and hit nothing then stiff, you should have hit something. So the other person gets two; if they sink on off there first shot then they still have two. The two shots goes until they stuff up twice. Shooting backwards is a new one though, thats weird. I also dislike not using the "semi circle" when you get two shots if the white is sunk. Although most tables now dont even have it, just the line.

You're right Beck, the shot doesnt get carried over, well the way we have always played it doesn't, but I can guarantee you will have lots of different opinions offered on the matter as everyone plays to different rules.

We play the 2 shots rule irrespective of how many balls you sink and usually use the second shot to set a snooker

Depends on whether you are playing "official rules", "pub rules", "mates rules" or MY RULES. My rules I always win! Like those ones much better!!

Most pubs have their own rules, and usually its good to follow by them to avoid any fights in the pub, their is sooooooooo many rules claimed as 'official' rules that realy its up to you and the player to agree on 1 set of rules before you start the game.
I remember playing a bloke from New Zealand once, he recons over there you can hit another players ball to knock your own in without it being 2 shots (They hit the white ball into YOUR ball, using your ball to knock one of theirs in)>...now i found that strange !.

OK so what happened was called a Standard Foul "Failing to cause the Cue Ball's initial contact with a ball, to be with a ball "On"." After a player has been awarded two visits the referee will make no call until the player fails to pot a ball "On". (Except for 30 second time warnings and for any fouls that may occur) The referee will then call "Second Visit" to advise the player that the first visit is complete and the second visit is about to begin. When you get "2 shots" you get to use them UNLESS you Foul So it goes like this You miss your ball (Standard Foul , 2 shots) , I have my shot and pot the ball(1) then I have another shot and pot it as well (2shots) THEN I MISS(3) a shot and it jaws , I THEN STILL HAVE MY 2nd SHOT LEFT , I then hit the ball and pot it(4shot) as well then I Pot another ball (5shots) THEN I MISS AGAIN ......That means I have played 6 shots all up BUT I only missed 2 shots ... at the end of the 2nd Missed shot it is the other persons turn . Best way to sort out all games is to state rules at the start of the game , When ever I go to new places and the person does not know / play comp rules then I make easy rules ..... 2 shots EVERY FOUL and shoot anywhere from behind the line , Pot the black to win . (these are Not Comp rules but good Pub rules) Hope the rules help you out for next time . Cheers Swanny

Forget pub rules... play prison rules...
If someone argues... you stab them. Nah... seriously... the second shot is cancelled once you sink a ball or foul.

You keep those two shots until you stuff up twice and then its the other persons go and everything is back to normal. Doesn't happen if you are both on the black though.

first up, 2 shots is extremely homo.
second, if you are homo enough to play, it is cancelled by the sinking of the ball. edit: even watch pool champs on fox, they dont use lame 2 shot rule

I've had a heap of mates with pool table's and thats the way everyone i know has played. Unless it's only a Victorian thing. you get to miss potting a ball twice, hence 2 free shots first free shot.....if the first ball goes in your still on your first free shot, on the next hit if the ball doesn't go in thats the end of your first free shot. Second free shot... same apllies to the above if your playing it as.... you hit a ball, ball goes in, 2nd shot ball doesn't go in end of your 2 free shots, thats not really 2 free shots as thats how you play a normal shot. A free 2 shots means just that, 2 normaly played shots. In normal play if you mess up one shot it goes to the next person. iF you mess up on your first free shot out of 2 free shots no matter how many balls you have allready potted it then goes to your 2nd free shot

It depends on where you are....Nsw don't play two shots which means no penalties when you stuff up, In WA you get two shots then they carry over if you sink balls (ie your wrong) when i played in pool comps in NSW they played two shot penaties and they carried over as this stops people from playing like a bastard and hence causing fights...all the nsw boys hated it

Sorry Poly, you might have 'played around' but have others, but there's definitely no two shot rule in any Sydney pub (where I grew up), nor in other parts of the state. I've also played in Brisbane where I believe they also do not have a two shot rule (that or they were NSW-corrupted...)

if the ball gets sunk at anytime, then the other player gets to to place the ball anywhere in the Semi-circle and then get's two shots! ... if a ball is putted in the first shot, it does not get carried over into a free 3rd shot :P

Learn how to play and the issue doesnt come up. /sarcasm
Seems to be a state thing. Ive always experienced it as being when you get 2 shots, youve got 2 shots, if you sink a ball on one of them, youve still got that shot as with normal play. I have to say, I can see an argument for the "Sydney" rule, and I dont normally see any sense in anything Sydney. |

I have played against people who carry it over, and others who do not.
Personally, I prefer not to carry over. You get two shots, except if you pocket a ball on the second shot. Pocketing on the first means nothing.
