Default Phone Fear

Hey people.

Does anyone else suffer fear from using a phone? I used to be petrified of using phones when I was younger, but have improved over time. I still get nervy to this day though.

I think it's because I don't have strong communication skills. Not sure if this was woth a thread, but maybe it might create some interesting discussion.

Yeah same here.

I've noticed under difficult circumstances I mix words up, and sometimes repeat them.

I actually suffered from stuttering as a child. I'm fine when I'm not stressed, but when I get nervous I get my words mixed up, and that's why I don't like ringing people on phones.

I hate phones, they're even worse than having to socialise in person.

I like my own company, yes I consider myself an introvert

Yep, i have the same issue with phone's and socialising in general.
Sometimes i miss out on deals coz i'm too fearful of making the call.
Its definately a confidence thing, when i was a kid dad believed kids should be seen but not heard and so i was always made to keep quiet.
When i run into friends at the shops etc. i make a point of talking to the kids, a handshake etc.
Makes them feel accepted i think which is something i never felt as a kid.

Yep, I hate the damn things, I am better with them now than I used to be, but I still find it difficult.

It probably cost me my job a while back, and since then I have really tried to improve more. Now my work involves mostly inbound calls, which are easier to handle but there are still times I dread the damn thing ringing.

Wow, didn't think this was such a common thing. I definitely find it hard to communicate over the phone and avoid it where possible, don't know what has caused it but it's been that way as long as I can remember.

After working in retail for far too long, I know exactly what you mean by pure refined hatred for people on the other end....

In regards to my mobile, if it ever rings i will just usually ignore it anyway. I will only speak to people on the phone when I want to!

The only phone I ever answer is my work phone...if people call my mobile I never pick up, people just text me, it's heaps better.

I stutter like nobody's business at times, but it appears to be seasonal...I just never know when those seasons are coming.

I have found that I should slow down my speech and breathe. When I run out of breath, I sometimes try to throw more words out and a jumble of poopie comes out.

I hate phones, I have been a phone counsellor, on call 24/7 by phone (even called while on holidays in Alaska).

My moble is on once or twice a month, if I remember. And if any call goes longer then 2 minutes, my hearing fails.

Does anyone else always have their phone on silent all the time? i.e. No vibrate, no ringtone, etc?

hate people that have ultra loud message and ring tones....especially default nokia ones.

Yes! Although;

I turn my phone on loud when I sleep so that the alarm wakes me up in the morning.

Otherwise the vibrate noise on the table or in my pocket is more than enough notification.

I intensly dislike the phone my demenour doesnt not translate onto the phone at all. Booming voice, eye contact, hand gestures, sentance and speak structure and good posture mean jack on the phone.

Iam quite a brilliant public speaker and orator, very helpful for politics student. Have quite a long history as a debater, but none of this translates on the phone. I refuse to discuss things on the phone that can be done in person and have used SMS text messaging probably about 5 times in my whole life.

I refuse to answer any phone, mobile or otherwise between about 10pm at night and 8am in the morning regardless of circumstances. The night is for sleeping, drinking and loving not for prattling on the phone.

Looks like your speaking ability doesn't translate to the keyboard either.

I have no fear of phones, but hate it when the person on the other end talks as if you are 100 miles away and they are try to tell you something without a phone (ie they yell), or they talk so softly you have to ask them to repeat everything and speak up!

How could people be 'scared' by a phone?
I just dont get it, but thats just me...
Personally, i dont have a problem with it, except when im up under the car and the phone rings (which is typical)
And dont get me started on drunken phone calls...
