Default AU XR6 VCT versus Honda VTEC Prelude

My mate has a bet that his mates Honda prelude VTEC Fourth GEN manual will beat my Au xr6 vct series 3 auto. I say hes full of it!!!!!!

Weighing things up, the prelude fourth gen vtec is a 143kw at the fly 1200kg car. Against a 172kw at the fly, 1450kg car...

Whilst that probably means nothing because the rev ranges are different, and ones auto and ones manual, i still think the odds are in my favour.

Ive got pacey extractors, xr8 intake and KnN filter and highflow cat on my car.

How quick can the stupid buzz box be? The driver also isnt a particularly skilled manual driver, knows no tricks and doesnt understand how rev ranges and good shifts work.

Im getting excited to be honest

I'd say prelude to 100kph, stock I6 NA auto's are slugs off the line compared to a revy v-tec.

Yeh, make sure you settle it the proper way.... 5-lap battle around Mount Panorama. Not on a drag strip.

i think you will be very surprised by the Honda, especially if it has some minor mods, or even just an exhaust. Dont bet to much!

Yeh, if I had to put money on it... I'd put it on the Honda cos I think it's capable of pulling a major upset.

I couldn't get any better than 16.09 out of mine. Same as your car, except I didn't have the K&N Filter and mine wasn't a sprint. Not that the badge makes any difference to the times.

Of course it does.

Without the badge his car would be lighter and beat the Honda for sure!

I asked the same thing you did a while back. It really depends on the condition of the car and of course mods. I've beaten a VT SS (probably thrashed) and almost got beaten by a bloody mazda 3.

Just drag him at a track and find out. There's really no way to be 100% unless you do it.

As soon as your get out of first gear, you'll be right... But getting out of that first gear does take a while

The VTEC's are actually not too slow. Not fantastically quick, but no slug.. Especially off the line. My mate has the same car, pretty quick upto 100km/h. Not that quick after that

I've beaten a Prelude in my VCT Ghia. He had me up to 50 kays but beyond that I just kept pulling away from him.

Preludes are extremely overated and there is no tuning potential in it. The bloke I know with the Prelude put an exhaust and intake and chip on and went BACKWARDS in power.

All so what is the big deal with VTEC?? Isn't VCT pretty much the same thing?

lets start with the nsx $70k for twenty year old car .new turbos half the price and would smoke it.as it would the s2000.and you want to mention a civic-type r.my mate had one of these ,unless you want to thrash the shiiiit out of your car constantly,it has no power.in my mates, the vtec you all ****on about does not kick in until 5,500 revs, below that it feels like a hyundai excel(have any of you vtec worshipers actually driven one).very gutless below 5,500.then yes at 5,500 it does feel like a semi-turbo kick in,but you have to thrash this car to make it work, not so with the ford, basically the honda is not a good driving experience because of this.so nothing to 5,500 then the cam kicks in for a couple of thousand revs(whoopee).drive a real car I say.

Vtec actually has two separate cams, a small lift cam for low revs and a high lift cam for high revs.

Preludes aren't meant to be a fire breathing sports car!

No. With the VCT system Ford vary the timing of the whole cam (+/- 10 deg if i remember correctly). Overall a pretty crude way of adjusting cam timing.

Honda's VTEC system uses cams with two different profiles all together. One profile for low rpm & one profile for high rpm.
