Cool Getting That Resto Registered

undefined

Hi all,

I've recently acquired a nearly rust free XB Fairmont coupe. It's not been registered for well over 15 years, and unfortunately the VIN & Engine Number is not on the VicRoads database (nor on any other state database).

Before I start pouring money into the thing, I need to find out how I go about registering it without being able to provide a prior rego number for VicRoads to trace.

Has anyone gone about doing this before? The previous owner is no help - he bought it unregistered and has no details to give me. I rang the original Ford dealer who sold the car in 1974, and they don't know where their archives are. Ford themselves don't have the rego number on record for cars that old.

So, as you can see - I'm in a bit of a pickle.

Any help you can offer would be very much appreciated. Cheers.

It's got an old rego label on it but it's so old & scratched up I can't read any details. All it has is the Vicroads symbol and the flower of the year. Nothing else.

Why would you expect trouble ?
if it has vin plates then run it through revs so when it comes back
clean you can then request confirmation with your main roads and hence get started

I'm not expecting trouble, I just don't want to sink heaps of money in to in and get held up by technicality after technicality. I basically just want assurance that I can register the thing.

I went in to VicRoads today and asked them what would happen if I just showed up with a shiny Coupe, RWC and requested rego and he didn't seem to think it would be a routine thing just to supply me with plates...

He virtually insisted I try to attain some prior info on the car such as the original rego number from the selling dealer, but sadly that's not going to happen...

Thanks all for the comments so far...

do a revs check on the car as atec77 suggested. they SHOULD have some history on the car, at least that it is stolen or a write off, or neither lol then take that to vic roads.

My wagon hadn't been reg'd for about 20+ years.
When it was ready last Dec all I produced was a RWC and a purchase receipt from the prev owner (who hadn't reg'd it either). Car wasn't on the records but I didn't have any trouble. Only hiccup was the bloke couldn't decide if it was a 65 or 66 (XP).

Kowalski - that makes me feel a lot better. Maybe I should take it to Geelong for rego to be sure LOL!

Thanks mate.

Yeah, I've got the authentication letter from Ford. I rang them yesterday, and also the original selling dealer (Duhig in Essendon) and neither can tell me the original rego number.

I'm heartened by stories from posters regarding just rocking up with a RWC & purchase receipt. It's 20 years since I last rebuilt a car and I basically did the same thing, but hey, that's 20 years ago....

as long as it has vin numbers and compliance plate you will have no problem even if it has never been registered before. it wont be a problem

You don't even need compliance plates in NSW, just as long as the shock tower number is clear and the car was built in Aus to the standards the RTA will issue rego, no problem. I know of a couple of people who have done this.

I bought a coupe that was a resto job. The car had no compliance plates or rego info or original engine. I was advised by vicroads to write a letter to the manager of registrations with all the info I could find on the car including proof of ownership. about 6 weeks later I recieved a letter from the manager of registraions giving approval to register the car.

Hope this helps, worked for me.

being a monoconstruction production car I dont think you will have any trouble doing as Kowolski did its only with stuff like mine that you will have issues the chassis could be out of bloody any thing

You need to contact the AOMC.

Essentially they have the records that Vicroads don't........read this:

Thank-you WayneHadfield. I'll send off a search to AOMC.

Anyone who knows - just to clarify - with the 1974 Falcons, the Engine number is the same as the chassis number right?
