Default Text Message vehicle service reminders

Just received a text from a well known Western suburbs Ford dealer...

"Dear Charlie, This is to remind you that your car is booked in for service at 9am on the 16th.. Regards ********* Ford"

My services are all done by Dyno-mite, NOT this dealer, So I rang and asked who made the booking... Service person said "Oh, disregard it if you didn't make a booking, It's an automatically generated SMS reminder service that we use, and would you like it booked in anyway?"

This is just one of many texts I've received lately from Ford dealers that I've either bought cars from or used for service in the past...
One on the 9th Oct.... "The all new Essendon Ford, free front end alignment with any tyres supplied and fitted in October.. Ring.. 9374-7010"

Just how rusty are these guys traveling?...
And isn't it a bit invasive?... I mean, I'd love to see what reaction I'd get from say Tenix, Multiplex or ABB if I attempted to drum up business via a text message? (And especially by falsely claiming that they had a booking scheduled!!)

I used to get a phone call from the dealer I bought my car from when it was about time for a service.

I started servicing my BA at 10000kms and at different places, so that put everything out of whack and they don't bother anymore.

That is a bit strange - particularly since they quote a day and time. I still receive letters from Brad Garlick Ford about servicing when I took my XR8 there once over 3 years ago. That sort of passive reminder I don't mind, I would get annoyed if I was receiving texts like that though.

I get the same messages from 'Thomson Ford' as well. That's where I bought my 04 BA Fairmont from in January this year. I just send them a message back saying 'thank you but I use my own independent mechanic because he are more reliable'.

I have only recieved text messages about services that I have already booked in for, none pre booking.

The one that really annoys me is that phone call half way through the day trying to sell all sorts of services while my car is in, you know the ones like radiator flush, power steering flush, EFI service etc. If they know the car needs these, why don't they ask me in the morning when I drop the car off. Why do they wait until later in the day to have someone that does not even know what the particular service consists of and is just a salesman calls me?

I know why, hoping I do not have time and will agree to anything. It annoys me because in my job it is not convenient to get phone calls through the day and when I miss their call, I then have to find time to call them back (and get transfered through 4 different people to find who wanted me) just to find out if it was a true problem that has been found.

I found Holden and Mazda do this as well, thankfully BMW do not as they sort all this out when you are sitting in that comfy leather chair in front of the service advisor when you drop the car off.

This is just another way to get more advertising in your home.

I wouldn't be surprised if in a few years you get sms ads from all sorts of companies - just like telemarketers ringing your home phone.

Same with spam on your computer through email.
