Default Quick suggestion. Member map?

Hi guys.

On another forum that I visit on a semi regular basis, they have a member map. Basically it is a map of Australia where you enter your postcode and it places a flag on the map where you are. I find it very helpful to see which members are nearby. It is a voluntary thing so those who wish not to participate do not have to. Would something like this be possible on AFF? Like I said I find it quite useful.

Sounds like a good way to contact members that might live close. Be useful for things like selling, cruises and events and get togethers. Good idea naddis.

Ok, I think I've got it right this time:
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UT...,48.339844&z=5

How to add your location:
1. You'll probably need a Google account to do this
2. Click on "Save to My Maps" from within this map
3. From here you should be able to zoom to your location
4. There should be an "Edit" button somewhere on the page where you can then drop a placemark to your rough location

That's about it I think

You can take it a little further and add an image to represent each placemark. Have made a similar one for the surgeries in our area, and have a photo of the surgery pop up when you click on the placemark. I think you can also list the address, email etc

You have some more advanced tools in Google Earth as to the type of terrain, streets etc

Thats not bad Gav, but it would be nice if the map was actually part of AFF.

You can create a kml file in google earth, load it onto the AFF web server and have it link to a google maps page.

See here:

So is it possible to get a direct link added to AFF for something like this?

I reckon a Frappr map would be better for this.

The server crash of last week was caused by my attempting to actually install one of the vBulletin hacks to make member maps possible - in this particular instance one that doesn't require any input from the members as it uses the IP addresses stored in the database to map both the users currently on line and all the users.

Typically, there is not much around for the older version we have so I am currently testing a 3.5.x installation on a new server that can be installed when testing is completed.

No idea on time frame at this point as I am still going through the process of adding all our modifications to the base installation.

Cheers
Russ

IP addressing based geolocation will not work in Australia as the majority of users are on DSL/HSDPA/DOD technology and the IPs proffered will almost always place the user in the state capitol.

i.e. Users in Mt Isa, Cairns, Birdsville and Southport could all have the same IP address at different times even on the same day.

Why not just use Frappr? Maybe not as pretty, but it has to be easier then compromising the stability of the site to have something integrated? Especially when we are running such an old version of vbulletin.

A very bad idea to show locations of cars/owners. Thats just advertising to car thieves and making there job too easy, IMO.
