it could be a scam maybe ask him for a phone number or meet him down the pub for a beer and a chat to make sure he's legit first

Leave it be.
If he can't turn up with a bank cheque in his hand then somethings wrong.
If he was really serious he would just eft the funds.

On the other hand, bank cheques can bounce, paypal is usually direct debit.....

lol so naive! no offence meant =)
you should really read the other thread that was posted, paypal can be charged back and if your account is in good standing you get benefit of the doubt (also buyers seem to be more highly protected), your bank can charge back paypal leaving the other person high and dry, the paypal account could be stolen in which case the money would be given back to the buyer and youd have to pay the paypal fees

and im sure there are many more ways of scamming. dont accept a middle man like paypal, if they cant do a bank deposit then dont give them the item
besides who spends 10s of thousands of dollars on paypal anyway? theres no way id trust paypal with that kind of money if i didnt know the seller/used the seller previously even if id never been scammed before

Not so naive, if it is direct debit then there are AUSTRALIAN laws that come into play and no one can pull the money out without your authorisation or by legal means e.g. bank error, ATO etc.

I have a friend who deals in high power radio transmitter valves world wide with values of over $20k sometimes. He always uses paypal, has been scammed several times, each time the Australian banks used Australian law to recover the funds.
Once paypal puts the money in your bank the bad guy is stuffed.

On the other hand bank cheques have not be safe for years....

yes, american banks can do that too, so when the buyer (me being the seller) decided he would like his $1500US back, the bank decided that the scammer was ME and they took the money off paypal who wouldnt do a thing about it... and then i owed paypal all that money =)
if that money hadve been transferred to my bank account i would still have it to this very day (actually id probably have new wheels) but it went to paypal first and altho they couldnt touch the money that i put into my bank account, they told me i owed them and when i said i wouldnt pay they threatened with debt collection
the bank cant use australian law to stop me owing paypal money unfortunately
and thats why i say what i say
sorry i just get over excited on this issue i guess, id hate for it to happen to someone else thats all

naive or not its fishy. Who would talk about buying a car before they even looked at it. If the person was legit he/she would inspect the car or at least come into contact with the seller by phone or stupid e-mail. This happened to a guy from work and in the e-mail they said they were willing to give 5 grand for a car advertised for 3 grand.... Who would pay almost double for a car? SCAM SCAM SCAM!!!!!!!!!! I found these e-mails usually come in at 12,1,2,3 in the morning.

WALK AWAY !!!!!!!
to many scammers using paypal (paypal is on their side not yours)
listen to those that have been conned or nearly conned(myself nearly conned)
some times logic overrides temptation !!!!!
as mentioned before he could pay by bank cheque, funds transfer, cash, ect
as for paypal being direct deposit the buyer instructs paypal when to pay !!!
very hard to get your car back once youve handed it over, and the buyer instructs paypal to with draw funds !!!!

While this may or may not be a scam, you really don't get it.

You wait until the funds are in your BANK account not Paypal account. Once they are there Paypal cant draw them back without your authorisation.
This is AUSTRALIAN law and the money is in an AUSTRALIAN bank account.

Ok, we were typing at the same time. Yes until it is in your own BANK account you are at their mercy.

FLAPPIST,
re your above comment, when i nearly got scammed (read in another thread),the buyer had put funds into my paypal account
but told paypal not to release into my bank account until i had paid ($700 odd)into an off seas bank account
when we refused and pulled the pin on the whole saga, paypal returned all monies from our paypal account back to the buyer

I agree. Pay cash upfront and everyone is happy.

I dont understand why Ebay cant crack down on this kind of thing. Western Union scams have been running for a long time too but they advertise using it. :

I've got a friend selling an AU right now and he had a similar encounter last week. The buyer was a "marine biologist on the ship right now" and was going to send an agent to pick the car up, using paypal to purchase it.

Complete scam, stay clear.

Thanks for the mail..Due to the nature of my work, phone calls making and visiting of website are restricted but i squeezed out time to check this advert and send you an email regarding it.

Don't worry about the pick up,my shipping agent will be coming to pick it up.I'll like you to send me your address so that my shipping agent can figure it out and come for the pick up and other necessary things....more so,send me your PayPal details(PayPal email) so i can pay in.

Await your response.

Matt

im boycotting out of principle now, with ebay and paypal being in bed together (the same company) i believe its a conflict of interest the way they make you use paypal

STAY AWAY from these tossers
another reason we pulled pin on our saga ,(the buyer was at sea also)
was he only knew DARWIN (couldnt remember any other states ),couldnt remember his dads address in DARWIN and the more questions we asked the more cagy he became
funnily enuf couldnt remember the freight company either(it was goin from brisbane to darwin)
honestly boys and girls if these scams,or any thing suss happens to u report them to paypal/evilbay or whoever straight away so we can try to weed these people out
if i had of been on ford forum earlier i would have read about these scams earlier

I think the part where he was willing to hand over 62k sight unseen would of been a dead giveaway? When ever I see a "scammer" buying or selling, I just bombard there e-mail with lots of stupid questions, And I get lots ofstupid answers! Keeps me amused!
Like everyone on here has said before, If it is too good to be true, then it probably is not true!
Paypal, rip off fees like BOSHOG said.
