OK, this just shocked me. Toyota just announced the pricing for it's new sportscar - 86. Starting at $29,990!
To get that under $30k is amazing value. Quote:

Holy moly i didn't think they would do it for under 40k.
Good on them, remarkable value.

The automatic is a $2500 option! seriously in this day and age to charge that much extra???
I know many will say but this car was meant for manual only ... but the reality is that most people will still be ordering the Auto and this is how Toyota will be crawling the price back up ... |

I know I sure as heck will, why buy a little hatch for daily duties when you can have this. Im interested to see Subarus pricing, and if STi will have a play. This is a great car on paper. Do want very much!

I think 370Z might be the front runner at the moment. Although that doesn't really move me that much either. The GT or GT-P is not out of the question, and the one I drove recently looked quite special (seduce with silver stripes, very unusual, and a bit classy, although the boot spoiler spoils it a bit and the bonnet bulge I do dislike from the drivers eye as you see it bob up and down, gee they are nose heavy), and almost gave me that bit of want in an attractive way that I just have never got with a modern Falcon. The badge on a modern car means nothing to me. I do struggle with the price they ask. And it is just more of the same really, so no real change for me. The Nissan is just sensational inside, but I do want to get up close and personal with the Toyota. In some ways my ideal would be the smart packaging inside of the RX8, but with a latest tech 4-pot or small capacity 6-pot and slick box, that would be awesome. The rotary is great fun but tiresome when not going bananas, so you go hard all the time :-) And they do drink fuel, and oil. I do miss it though, an absolutely sensational car with some incredibly clever design. Just needs a new engine... I think I have just been forever ruined by a couple of days with a 911. I shouldn't have done it. Everything else just feels pox now...

There will be turbo kits and all kinds of aftermarket mods available for this car almost immediately.
Aftermarket tuners & developers were given access by Toyota and allowed input throughout the whole devlelopment phase. The idea being this car is a blank canvas designed to be modded, allowing Toyota to sell it ridiculously cheap. Quote:
My thoughts exactly! An auto would transform a car like this, and not for the better. Call the $2.5k cost a tax on stupidity. Quote:

This car has been for sale for the last 6 months now in Japan and USA, I’m not aware of any turbo kits still on offer (excluding any massive engine conversions a few have done which probably cost more than double the cars cost), do you have any links?
Personally I don’t think that just bolting on a turbo or a supercharger will be an easy exercise … The engine is a high tuned N/A running a too high compression ratio for any force fed applications, the engines internals have been designed to be light and rev happy rather than supper strong and boost happy, finally the ECU is complicated and closed from what I gathered … yes a few racing teams / people did modify this car already, but the cost of these mods would have easily exceeded the price of new M3s / 911s and that is a total waste of money … Quote:

29990 including LSD is fantastic. Add in Toyota resale and fixed price servicing - it actually starts to be just as compelling on a value equation than it is on its apparent excellent driving dynamics.

Hate to say it, but why anyone would want one of these in an auto defies belief. These cars are not marketed to the local school run, these are marketed to those who want an affordable alternative to a fast, good handling vehicle, and don't want to fork out 40k for a WRX.
Great work Toyota, now just need to work on the missus.

There was a comment on the Drive article that someone had got a quote for one last week which was $10K more than the price indicated.
Grain of salt I know, but interesting.

Looks to be a new cult classic. I wonder how long it takes for someone to slap a turbo on it?

Cheap platform that can easily be modded and personalised. Hats off to Toyota and Subaru. I'd like to see Ford do another Capri with a similar philosophy as the 86.

you get what you pay for - its a small car and not super powerful. Pricing seems very normal and fine.
