White House strikes back on Death Star petition
The White House has dashed the hopes of Star Wars fans across the galaxy by rejecting an official petition calling for the US government to build a Death Star - the fictional, planet-destroying space station featured in the iconic movies. Over 30,000 people signed a petition calling on the US government to secure resources and funding and begin construction of a Death Star by 2016. Paul Shawcross, head of the White House budget office's science and space branch, said building a Death Star would simply be too expensive. "The construction of the Death Star has been estimated to cost more than $US850,000,000,000,000,000," he said. "We're working hard to reduce the deficit, not expand it. "The Administration shares your desire for job creation and a strong national defence, but a Death Star isn't on the horizon. "The Administration does not support blowing up planets." The White House accepts all petitions and responds to ones with over 25,000 signatures. Quirky petitions have proved popular in recent weeks, including one calling for government to mint a coin worth $US1 trillion. The Administration shares your desire for job creation and a strong national defence, but a Death Star isn't on the horizon. The Administration does not support blowing up planets. Paul Shawcross, head of the White House budget office's science and space branch The Death Star petitioners argued the project would create jobs and strengthen national defence. Mr Shawcross says while the US will not have a Death Star, it does have many space-related projects, including the International Space Station. "If you do pursue a career in a science, technology, engineering or math-related field, the Force will be with us!" he said. "Remember, the Death Star's power to destroy a planet, or even a whole star system, is insignificant next to the power of the Force." http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-01-1...-house/4462332

Well to be fair, with their population, there are a lot of very smart Americans. Sadly, the percentage of idiots also increases, and we all know how idiots like to attract attention, hence making them look dumber as a nation.

The white house petitions are viewed as a joke because they ignore the ones they don't like.
Defense of marriage, legalize pot, reform wall street, kick the special interests out of politics . Nothing but crickets chirping over those petitions People figured it out and twitidiots and facebook trolls are having fun with it and then patting themselves on the backs if they get something over 25,000 signatures . The best one recently was a petition to deport Piers Morgan . Cross your fingers on that one because he would probably land in Australia if they did |

This is used to stop rabid lunatics who get temporary control of the government putting all sorts of stupid laws and restrictions in place that would then made virtually impossible to repeal due to the actions of rabid lunatics in the public service bureaucracy....... Australia could learn a LOT from this....... |

That petition site is moronic. I wish they'd shut it down. It's embarrassing that we have thousands of people coming up with pointless petitions and getting signatures for them, while completely ignoring our nonfunctioning Congress, deficit spending, and crippling debt.
But hey, wouldn't it be cool to build a Death Star?

Yes, it's a funny idea, until I remember that my tax dollars had to pay someone to make an official response to someone's joke request when my country's debt is measured in trillions.

However if its any consolation, at least your Government didnt spend a few billion on a desalination plant that will now officially never be used to keep the daily cost down to just $1.8 million per day..... Hmmm come to think of it, Victoria probably could have built a Death Star for less than the cost of the desalination plant. I wonder if it can be retro fitted?
