These new Dash cams are great but really only meant for car accident situations to establish who's right and wrong for insurance purposes etc.
But I've caught on film some pretty average driving for example - today a white van was playing rolling roadblock games on an 80 kph highway, crawling in the right lane then speeding up, slowing down then pacing himself next to a slower car that was in the left lane (pretty much going to great lengths to prevent anyone passing) Then pulling up at the Red light the left lane was clear. I did a lane change to go around him, but as soon as I did this he also lane changed to block me in.....then he took off slower than the car next to him :( I went around him passing him then he changed back into the right lane to turn right :/ So he deliberately changed to the left lane (to stop me from getting ahead) even if he was about to turn right......there was no provocation, I didn't tailgate, flash or toot....what a tool and it's all on film. Some people name and shame by putting the footage on youtube but I think that is leaving yourself wide open for litigation unless the rego plate is obscured. But I wonder what the actual legal position is with regards to bad driving being put on youtube? Last edited by muso; 02-08-2013 at 05:48 PM. |

Take it to the local cop shop and ask of they want a look. If not delete it.

"What do you do with Dash Cam footage of Moron drivers?"
I laugh and be amazed at how they got a licence, and hope their driving doesn't cause a catastrophe in the future. |

It's strange how when you know you have it on film no matter how bad or selfish their driving is, it's like water off a duck's back, it doesn't really bother you I know it sounds 'petty' but it's like they haven't got away with it

I usually just delete it. The only time I'll keep the footage is if it affects me directly (Crash or near miss).

Call ACA, tell 'em you've got footage of tax dodger hoons, who are queue jumping immigrants.

Just delete it. If it didn't cause an accident then there's no real need to keep it...

Pretty sure someone here recorded a lot of bad driving and it ended up on ACA.
I don't know the finer details though. |

Guys can we take this a little seriously?
Some of the average driving we see & record might be a giggle later on, but its damn frustrating & dangerous in the moment. And thats the point, you do it in front of a undercover cop car and you'll be pulled over quick-smart to have a little chat & be given a couple of little tax sheets for you free spirited driving. (Read: being a brainless, inconsiderate idiot). I have long thought of installing a dash or window cam in my car. I have seen some choice driving moves (as I'm sure we all have). The question is, what can we do with such footage? Which cop shop? Your local? Local to the incident? Highway patrol branch, or area traffic branch? Has anyone taken any footage to them before? (regardless of state) Was there any result? I am a big believer in if you did something wrong that is clearly brain dead or dangerous on our roads, then you should be punished.

The question is Revolver 45 if the footage is of a driver doing something actually illegal. The situation described by the OP isn't necessarily illegal and although moronic, police wouldn't have the time nor interest to see the footage. However a recording of a skid might be of interest to them but still a bit hazy as to whether they can actually pursue charges on the basis of the footage. All photos/videos can do is provide evidence to strengthen a case against other unrelated hoon driving offences.

I've also heard of drivers using the brake pedal as a left foot rest which keeps the brake light on wondering why people are angry with them. Then you have the non indicators at roundabouts who don't realise the annoyance it causes. But I must admit the right lane hogs are annoying when traffic flow is disrupted by them. |

Firstly, say someone did try and sue you, they would need to find who you are IRL with your Youtube user name. That would require some detective work. And number B) if you really want to do it, and stay hidden. E z just use a proxy and create a new user account on Youtube. Sure you won't get many hits and be rollin' in dat dere u tube monez, but you will get satisfaction. |

Easy, if it doesn’t really affect you, keep it to yourself.
You’ve had an Autocam for three minutes and now you want to show the world everything you see? I’ll give you some friendly advice, free of charge. Be careful what you post. I say this because you are naive and new to the whole Autocam thing. I have hundreds of hours, in fact, 2 X 2TB drives full of footage that I’ve taken over the years and some of the stuff I have will certainly shock many people. That’s why nearly all of the bad stuff I have will never be seen outside of my own house. I have a few clips on YouTube, not many, but some of these are a few years old and were before a lot of people decided to roam the streets with Autocams showing every single person who accidentally moves over in a blind spot, doesn’t come to a complete stop at a stop sign, holds a mobile phone to their ear or stops six bloody inches over the solid line at a red light. FFS, who cares? A lot of this stuff is embarrassing, for the person who uploads, simply because some of the stuff you see that you may think is outrageous, to others, is not even remotely a problem. The word Drama queen comes to mind. I could give you 5 hours of people overtaking over double lines, who cares? It does get boring after a while. If you really want to see bad footage, just look at Russian Autocams on YouTube or Liveleak. There is nothing that you could post that comes anywhere near to what goes on over there. The footage that I keep is what directly relates to me. If someone is likely to complain, either to my boss, or the police, I will keep all of the footage relating to an event and what went on before. This has saved my backside quite a few times, however, I would not put this type of thing on YouTube. Remember, if you get it wrong, it isn’t hard to find you. And that, I can guarantee. Enjoy your Autocam by all means, just don’t try to be the new Sheriff in town. Also, if you witness something really bad and do decide to hand footage over to the police who use it to prosecute someone one, FFS, keep it to yourself. Don’t tell anyone. My 2.2 cents, GST included.

Why is it people feel empowered when they can identify another road user easily?
Unless the footage you have involves someone getting hurt or property being damaged, then why report it? Why waste Police resources with something as petty as someone carving you up in a van? Is it all that serious? I assume you are and have been the perfect, respectful, law abiding driver every time you hit the roads? If not, you should take this into consideration. |
