Default Buying a ranger new

Hey guys I might be in a position to buy my first ever brand new car and I want a ranger I can afford a xlt and wild trak but not sure what the diffrence is in kit I mean from looking at the specs on the ford site the wild track has just a few more options than xlt and that kit doesn't do much for me plus I carry bikes and other stuff so if I did get a wild trak I would have to remove that rear cover on the tray.

Your opinions please.

P.S. english is my second languange so before anyone flames my grammer or spelling tuff

buy the bigger motor 3.2 Lt and also be aware that all the electrical for the side air bags ( Duel cab) run ontop of the centre tailshaft hump under the carpet right through to under the rear seat

Everything I have read on them indicates they are the best. My family is still in Oz and my dad took my recommendation, checked them out, and just bought two for his business. Stay away from the manual gearbox (I love manuals, it's just that particular box). I would get the XLT dual cab 3.2 diesel automatic 4x4. I believe that configuration will have the most favorable purchase price to resale ratio for you.

Why stay away from the manual?

Anyhow I don't own one but my parents do, they have towed a 3 tonne caravan around Australia with a XLT manual Ranger. My old man can't fault it, not one issue with it and he loves it.

Glad to hear the manual is going good. I was probably reading some negative reviews and confusing it with the Mustang's manual box problems. I would probably buy the manual then.

There is nothing wrong with the manual. Mine was a little notify when new but has now freed up and is fine. I wasn't going to get a manual until I drove a demo with 10000km on it.

I bought a manual, certainly nothing wrong with it. Is a little notchy as naddis01 said, but frees up quickly.

Are people still sooking about that? If you're a manual man its a non issue and it's not going to be a smooth high performance box. The Ranger is classed as a truck it needs to be durable, functionality should and is the number one concern for a truck.

I think the Ranger is the best product in Fords range at the moment, testament to Australia's talent in design and engineering. On the out side its a huge truck, but from the inside its almost sedan like...

You answered your own question about removal of the hard lid, buy the XLT.

For the comments on manuals & auto's either one is personal choice, I like my Auto in which I towed a caravan over 14,000 K's with out any issue.

Manual or auto fine. Auto better for day to day grunt, manual limited to 400Nm in 1st 2nd 3rd. But flip side is don't find manual driving a complaining of lag...

Both great choices.

Ah torque restriction on the manual? That sucks. Ram does that too with the Cummins diesel. 650 lb-ft instead of 850! I guess driving both is the only way to truly see what you like. Good thing they invented test drives!

Boza, I own and run a driver training company and have 6 Rangers. The Ranger 3.2 Diesel beats anything else on the market by a longshot. Other than standard servicing we had a couple issues with the gear linkage on the very early ones, but that seems sorted on our later buys. Yes the box is tight but you get used to it. That said I would still go the auto. If I was going manual I would buy the XLS. The XLT is the better buy than the WildTrak. The tray cover on the wildtrak alone will drive you nuts.

The reason I like the wild trak is that it has power sockets in the tray and also does the xlt have cooled center console bin like the wild trak not sure on that one.

I gues I can always tick some nicer wheels on the xlt and option it with the reverse camera and away I go.
Still have to find out how far I can strectch my money

The XLT does have power sockets & centre console cooler, I suggest you go to Ford & look at the two models or get their brochure so you know exactly the difference & pricing.

My dad was recently in the market for a Ranger but unfortunately it's was a 6mth wait if its not already on the showroom floor - there was no white (had to be white) auto 4WD XLTs around in NSW. We ended up going with a new white 7spd auto Navara ST-X 550 which we picked up yesterday - with fleet discount we ended up with over a 12k discount and 0.9% finance. We couldn't wait, it's the workshop pick up as well as a second car.

Hopefully you won't have to wait and possibly settle for something else!

Pick mine up this Friday. Placed order end of June. Advised delivery will be mid September. No worries, I can wait. I have had the dealer want to relieve me of my trade in twice. Asked when the Ranger arrives ... probably mid to end October now... errrr No, I'll keep my car until we get the Ranger. Advised three days later Ranger has been "Obtained from another dealer who wanted a car they have in stock .. No Ranger, no car" MMmmm I wonder.

When you are talking to the salesman, ask about the auto gearbox and the 5 cyl motor problems. Don't let him pull the wool over eyes, talk to service manager as well. The gearboxes are have pump problems( ford have over a hundred dead gearboxes in a warehouse) and some motors have a knock they have trouble diagnosing(it was thought to be a resonance due to the sump).

You're in for a very long wait if you want a Wildtrak, they don't last long when they come up.

As if a salesman or service person is going to tell you this!!!

This would have to be the 1st I & others ever heard of with Auto problems, btw I have Auto with no problems.

It is irrelevant to me if you believe me or not. I have told you what problems could occur.

I was going to buy a Wildtrack, after test driving it my wife did not like the turning circle. The problems would had little bearing on the outcome of the purchase if my wife liked it.

It is not about believing you or not but about what salesperson & service manager will say to potential buyers and that is not rubbishing their own products.

We all know some vehicles will not be 100% perfect from defects.

Cheers.

My brother use to work as a tech in at major ford dealer. He still has a few contacts who work at the dealerships. He contacted one them to get a bit information a new vehicle purchase. He was told about the Ranger problems then.
When I went to my local Ford dealer about an issue with my fg ute, I asked the tech about any issues with the Ranger(I was interested in a new Wildtrack). He followed the company line, couple of minor problems etc. I mentioned what my brother had told me and who he was and were he got his information. Then all of a sudden the information about the motor and gearbox problems flowed freely.

I had the same conversation today prompted by your post with a service manager at a major dealership here in Adelaide, who I've known for years and knows I'm not buying one, but outside of odd engine ticking issues and such they haven't seen any endemic trans issues with the auto. I don't believe single sources either so made another call to a mate in fleet at another dealership, same picture. If this is true it's news.

(although if it was milkshaked ZF's out of the passenger range I'd believe 100 over the years)
