Hi all! A question I've always wanted to ask. I'm a Ford nut, but I've watched V8 supercar series for years and have always had a huge fascination with Australian muscle sedans. Falcons, Commodre's, ute's....really wish we had access to these cars in the states. Well, the Falcon's at least...would much rather have an XR6/8 over a Pontiac G8, and I'll take the keys to a mustang over a late model GTO/Monaro if I have the choice. What kind of US pony cars do you guys like and wish you had? How hard are fourth gen mustangs and camaros to come by in the land down under?

Pony cars aren't as common, as they usually have to be imported by private dealers, and (in Australia, at least) converted to right-hand drive, which will usually take the cost out to around 100k mark. More in most cases.
I've just moved to New Zealand, where you CAN drive LHD cars. There's a dealer not far from me that has ZL1's, GT500's, a CTS-V, as well as a few F-150 Raptors and Dodge Chargers etc. judging by the number of these cars I've seen just in the week I've been back - I'd say they're still pretty popular. |

A while back, they were going to sell SS utes in the states as a 'new' El-Camino. I reckon the utes would have done very well over there. The minitruckers would love them!

60's mustangs are a dime-a-dozen here, the price of a classic falcon is push high by the existence of the GT, to a point where its cheaper to buy a mustang...actually used 4 64-66 mustangs as our wedding cars, including a mint '66 convertible.
But as far as new mustangs go, the high price of the RHD conversion is a killer...$120 000 for a 2012 Mustang GT...

I like the early 90s Mustangs just because they're so different.
I'd have one of those.

I'd have to say that I have no interest in late model pony cars.
Be interesting to see how they fair when that is an Australian Ford fans only new option. Personally I may look at getting either another FGF6 or possibly a S/C FG GT just before it all ends here. Better bang for buck & atleast with the F6 it's almost all Oz |

So no LHD late model cars? guessing thr older mustangs are legal because they are pre-1989? are the fox body cars worth anything Australia?
Given it costs over 100k to get a late model mustang in Australia, I can see how they arent very common haha I'd kill to have an F6 Typhoon! Actually trying to sniff out a Barra engine for my '04 mustang. Ford power with a twist

You can actually buy barra engines from the states, can't find the link for the site but they sell them as carbied generators for some reason. Apparently afew guys over there have bought them then imported parts from here in Australia to use them in there cars, or so the story goes. It should work out cheaper than having to freight an engine from Australia to the US, hope that helps you mate.

Only mustangs I can recall that could be purchased through a Ford dealer in Oz, with Ford Australia's blessing (warranty) were the 1966 v8 notchback model & 2001 & 2002 models, the 1966 model was used to help promote the release of the 1966 XR Falcon range, These Falcons were promoted as "Mustang Bred".
The 2001 & 2002 model was converted to RHD by a company called Tickford, who were contracted by Ford at the time to do "Special Vehicle" mods to the performance range of new Ford vehicles. 2001 & 2002 Mustangs were also introduced to take on holden's 2 door monaro. Both these Mustangs were imported and converted in limited numbers. Any other model of Mustang here in Australia is a private import. |

I like 90s mustangs light car with a v8, my favourite would have to be sn95 Saleen s351 awesome car , and the 2011 on mustangs with the coyote are mint, and the newest gt500 with the 5.8 modular is kick ***, and I love the dodge challenger and srt8 jeeps.
I just don't like it how heaps of people are putting LS engines into mustangs, people need to put 351s or coyotes before brand x v8s |

It's easy to forget that Ford did sell the 2001 SVT Cobra in Australia as the Mustang Cobra. Due to conversion costs, prices were ridiculous (over $80000) and there aren't many around.
There are so many first generation Mustangs here, that in all-Ford shows you here people complaining that there are too many of them. |

Crazy how many early Mustangs are for sale here in Oz.
Look at Carsales, choose Ford and sort by earliest year. Once you get into the 60s its all Mustangs, with the odd Falcon scattered amongst them. So going by that, you would have to think theres probably more 60s Mustangs here than 60s Falcons, which is incredible considering they sold hundreds of thousands in that period.

A lot of them would've been brought out here after the 60s. I remember they were all the rage back in the mid-late 90s, in particular.

I've been shopping for the right fox body mustang for years. Little buggers go like stink with a manual tranny. Bit squeezy for my 110kg, 6'3" frame though. But I was looking at a 2002 Cobra recently and they are even tighter inside due to the shape of the steering column cowl, centre console, and door trims.
To answer the OPs question regarding a fox bodies worth, pretty much only worth as much as someone is willing to pay since there is no history to back them up over here (as in nobody knows what they are). Mint condition in the mid teens although some owners advertise them for substantially more and expect them to sell. The are very, very rare over here.

If someone decided to park a newish dodge challenger in my driveway I would be quite happy to accommodate it.

Which version of the movie? The original was a '73. The godawful remake was a faux '67 Shelby.
