yeah i dont think SA has any of those rules yet, P platers can drive any car any time and you get of them at the age of 19 (like me)!

i think that law will be too harsh, you're suppose to get most practice and you should be trusted on the roads... if it comes in victoria then i'll still drive around...

It's easy for Governments to pass harsh laws on minority groups - and popular with many voters. I'm 40 but I think it is too specific and too hard. The real question is how do you stop young males from risk-taking pursuits?

Do they think teenagers will stop giving their mates a lift after midnight?

More charges, more suspended sentences and more genuine inconvenience for most young people - and I think that Sux IMO!

Curfews are a bad idea as first they want people not to drink and drive, with P platers needing to have a 0.00 BAC when driving. If a group is going out, that leaves you with the option of taking 3 cars instead of 1 to move a group of 5 and then having to either get home before 12 or head home after 5am. Otherwise they have to take 2 taxis, which aren't cheap. Public transport wouldn't be any good in the early hours either.
It's also hypocritical that car pooling is encouraged for the majority with things like transit lanes on freeways in an effort to reduce pollution and traffic congestion, but if you're a P plater we don't want you to.
It also denies younger drivers the opportunity to help transport friends to uni/work, which collectively reduces their transport costs.

Most of the serious multiple fatality accidents you read about involving younger drivers usually deal with drink driving/unlicenced driving and the driver being an idiot or even trying to outrun the police. A few deal with underage drivers who aren't legally entitled to drive a car in any capacity on the roads. As a result the vast majority are being punished with these new restrictions that will merely change the timing of accidents, not prevent them.

Wow. That's harsh. That's really really harsh.

No problems with the 0% BAC and p platers shouldnt be incurring traffic offences in their 1st 12 months... but curfews and age limits... wow.

I assume they've addressed the additional resources required to police these new rules (/end sarcasm)

I agree with them...If you live over here- you'd know why... Unless you can get clearence for driving at the specific times i.e a job or whatever...its a good idea...we have so many hoons over here...it must be something in the water...My girlfriend is on her P's and as much as she'd be a safe driver, its those idiots in there hot 4's and V8's with the rear wheels as stock and the fronts with mags (a tell tale sign of a potential hoon) They're the ones that i dont trust..

Mate. I live in the Perth area and I'm a hoon. I'm well and truly off my P's. And still a hoon. P plates don't label you a hoon straight away. Not only that but if every P plater was to drive like a granny, where o where would they gain any real experience? Not every one can afford an advanced driver training course.

Read my Quote carefully...
Im talking True P Plater Hoons. This wasnt an attack on P Platers..i've been there and done that, Im talking about Late Nights, Young Guys in there Hotted up Cars that are out to Hoon. Drags happen most late at night, guys are out to impress girls and the ones that have the REAR tires replaced with stock ones (usually to do Doughy's and Drag)...These are the ones im talking about...the dangerous ones..
Im not talking about Driver Training or anything...But after midnight, its a peak time when it comes to car crashes..It's stupid to think that you need to hoon to get real driving experience..that just endangers people..It doesnt mean you have to drive like a granny to have fun in your car..just be sensible about it..keep your racing and wild driving for Barbagello. Just because someone is a Hoon doesnt mean theyre experienced

I too live in Perth. My gripe is why target people because of their age? If you look at the statistics closely, the problem doesn't start immediately when people get their 'P's, but after they have had their licence for at least 6 months and then become real drivers. Further more, the danger period doesn't end by their 19th birthday.

We already have enough laws to police WA roads. Just enforce them. The people who are currently causing the problems now would end up without a car and those who obey the law would be able to give their mates a lift home if they don't have enough money to call a taxi and are too embarassed to call their parents.

All it does is incourage young people to drive with out their P Plates and therefore won't be hassled by the cops... which leads to the problem anyway... theres never any cops around when those who want to be idiots behind the wheel young or old are driving. I travel between sydney and canberra quite a lot at all hours and let me tell you I dont see that many police on the roads... only sometimes near goulburn because of the new wipper sniper coppers out of training.
More police on the roads patroling causes less accidents, not speed camera or curfews or limit of number in a car.

The limited passenger rule seems very harsh, same with the curfew.

there is a thread in THE PUB on this already and goes like this.

New reports released this morning states that new legislation will be introduced into Western Australia for P-Platers which will enforce a curfew between midnight and 5am and also only allow them to carry one passenger under 20 for the first 6 months.

It is only for the 1st 6 months and exemptions are allowed. How many 17 yr olds have a job after midnight and before 5am. The effect on young drivers will be negligable and could give them a better grounding. Not only that thyere are times I want to see my P plate daughter home by 12 so that may be the ticket.

I suspect threads will be combined soon.

Some aspects are pretty freakin harsh but im not too concerned with them. Ill be off my P's by then.

Do feel a bit sorry for others though. Although theyll taxi a mob around from parties and such anyway.

Those laws are pretty harsh.

In W.A do you have two P plates like NSW? We have Red green plates foir a year then onto Greens for 2 (i think) then onto fulls.

If you do does this affect both P Plates?
