well i was driving along a backroad up in the hills where i live and had to cross a fairly dodgy looking wooden bridge which had a sign saying: max load 2000kg.
now, knowing i really shouldnt have seeing as my car is around 2400 with a full tank but there was no way to turn around and so i chanced it, half way across and i hear a sickening crunch, get out and one of my back tyres has gone straight through the planks...DOH. so with a bit of swearing, a bit of pushing and alot of revving i managed to get the poor girl free, and amazingly the only damage was one of my tailpipes got slightly bent. |

Damn, I wouldn't have though a few hundred kilos would have made the difference,
I hope you let the appropriote people know, you'd feel pretty bad if the broken plank caused an accident. |

The car would have seemed appropriate if you had have fallen through.

well, that is pretty reckless of both the company who built the bridge and the local council who maintains it. Regardless of how old the bridge is.
I may not be a civil engineer (mechanical :P ) but anything that is designed has to have a factor of safety designed in. IE the sign said max 2000kg, should really mean it would be able to take 10,000kg... An example of this would be an elevator... they say a maximum of 500kg for example, in reality it should be over-engineered to take at least 2000kg. You got lucky with the bridge... next time take the long way around... :P

These wooden bridges are crap and desperately need replacing. I know of one south of Kingscliff where they reduced it from two lane to one lane with footpath/cycleway access instead of building a decent bridge. Part of the issue was argument with developers further south over who should pay for it. Geez, even a temp Army bridge would be better. If it can hold tanks .... |

Yeah, I don't want my dirty mind to go there but I don't suppose you've ever had much success "making out" with a significant other down lover's lane in that rather "unique piece of automotive history"
Unless you go to a goth or emo convention. Quote:

So the sign says max 2000kg, yet you drove over the bridge knowing full well your car weighs much more.
Stupidity at its best, and I hope you pay for the damage to the bridge. |

wonder how much theyd want to replace a wooden bridge built at least 60 years ago that was dangerously degraded. |
