I'm just curious as to weather anyone on the forum has ever applied and sucessfully obtained an exemption to jump up a license class?
I ask because i currently have a Heavy Rigid license, but havent had it for long enough yet to apply for my Heavy Combination. Would be very handy to have at the moment. I know of a couple of people who were on their P's and were able to apply for an exemption to go straight to a heavy rigid license (on their p's you can only go for your light or medium rigid) but dont know the background into how it came about. What exactly do you need it for??
If it's local you will most likely get it, say within 100km of depot, that's how most of the tipper drivers get it, well that and they can plea that they need to take over the family business due to an illness of the main operator (usually Dad).

I'm having a change of pace a while and going to give the building a rest for 12 months.
Been driving casually for a mates dads business in a big rigid for a while, and pretty much am going into full time work for them. I'm not going to be doing interstate work apart from possibly a run to bathurst once a month. But some of what i'd need the license for is out of the 100km radius. For instance the rigid i drive is a 14L 420hp Iveco. Thats pretty much where i am all week, but then with stuff like on sunday i went to mildura and back. The semi would have used 50 - 80L less diesel, and been much nicer to drive that far ( cruise, speed limiter etc.) and if the load that has to go is over a certain size someone else has to take it if it wont fit on mine. Pretty much they asked me to look into it because will mean i'm a lot more useful to them than only being able to do rigid work. |

Cant really see how this helps you but I was able to obtain a MC-X licence (restricted MC) to drive Tractors with up to 3 implements behind as a farmer. Havent even gone for my MR/HR yet. Will do when I get a chance. Was just a matter of writing a nice letter to the transport dept.

Check with your licencing department as you may be able to do a "Training In Lieu of Experience" course that will mean you can go straight to the licence you need. They had a system in SA prior to the licencing system going national where a guy I worked with went straight to a heavy truck licence without having to hold a light truck licence at all. He did a TILE course that ran over a couple of weekends, did the test and got the licence. I've got no idea if this can still be done but it is worth asking.
