Default Poor End

Yesterday(23rd Dec.) an XW Falcon slammed into a tree at Birkenhead here in Adelaide. It happened along Victoria Road near the cement factory at Birkenhead. Apparently the car was a GT but I hope it's a replica, anyway both people driving the car were flung from it as it caught fire one dying on impact and the other shortly after. This was a freak accident as it is a straight stretch of road but it has loads of pine trees in the median strip which has lifted the road in places with their roots. What happened is they were travelling along(Presumably at a high speed) and hit one of these bumps in the road causing the car to lose control at which time it went up on the median strip hit the tree head-on which has flung the car around 180 degrees(Hence the speed verdict) and it has ended up facing the opposite way on the same side of the road as it was travelling along. The weird thing is my mother saw it at about 4:45pm and the accident happened shortly after 5:00pm.

Here is a pic

The tree on the left of the pic is the tree they slammed into(Travelling from left to right from the pics. view ending up facing the opposite way)

and here is a link to the Article

http://www.news.com.au/adelaidenow/s...006301,00.html

BTW the Owner/Driver was a mate of my father's mate and the car had only been finished on the 19th of December.

Poor end to both of the guys plus the XW.

pplugg

P.S. I have to introduce myself properly soon but I'm a bit shy :

You mean besides too fast? A tragedy for sure, but a self inflicted one for at least of the car's occupants. Still a waste of life.

a hard hit indeed. unless its a really wide tree, its odd how the whole front was pushed back squarely..
considering where it happened, I'm surprised there isn't a local trying to steal the diff/wheels in that pic...

I doubt very much that the vehicle was a true XW GT Falcon, more likely a souped up 302 or 351 falcon, the vehicle, no matter how much was spent on renovations, or how well it was cared for, was still a 1969 model car, a car still fitted with T Model Ford technology, with what looks like to be 8 to 10 inch wheels, which if the vehicle was to hit an oil or water patch would aquaplane and contribute to a crash. It is time all vehicles were fitted with either an electronic or mechanical speed limiting device, this includes not only cars, but motorcycles, utes, vans and any other vehicle licensed for on road use. All new vehicles should also be fitted with an electronic tracking device similiar to a gps to allow the vehicle to be held to any posted speed limit, this could be achieved by the government feeding all the relevant data regarding speed zones into a system that can automatically control speed through a satellite. These measures would ensure our roads would be safer and less likely to have road deaths by speeding.

The owner/driver of the car owned Carlign(Mechanics) at Semaphore, dunno about the passenger. Oh and rodderz, they were affiliated with the Finks but they weren't members.

Actually it's a bad pic, it isn't really pushed back squarely, the tree made contact in about the same position as the passenger headlight, which caused the car to slide counter-clockwise the tree moving along the front of the car until just before the drivers headlight at which point it finished its 180 degree spin and the car propelled itself away from the tree for about six feet.

Oh and for anyone interested the tree is about 30-40cm wide.

Also if anyone wants to, take a close look at the front drivers guard... that hints to a fair bit of speed.

that left front wheel is pushed back a long way and an xw is a solid car. i drove tow trucks for ten years and i dont think i towed any early falcons that bad. wouldnt be a nice way to go, i think at that sort of speed you would know you were doomed. and that last bit before an impact always seems like slow motion.

As I said, slow down. It may be Christmas, but people can die at anytime.
Take nothing for granted, especially your safety.

What a sad thing. Once again familys of the two are left to pick up the pieces. Slow down in town. Want to punch it, then head out of town.

Sorry but I find it hard to have any sympathy, in fact my brain is screaming "serves you right".

The only thing Im grateful for is that the ******* in the car killed themselves and not some poor innocent person/s standing near by or driving the other way.

Its morons like these that give us enthusiasts a bad name, and the more of them that wipe themselves out in this fashion, the better off the world is.

My sympathy to the families as they are the ones that are suffering.

Really peoples - let's keep things on track - everyone is entitled to their own opinion, as well as a right to express it in a polite manner.
REMEMBER that there may well be people that are in close proximity to the victims involved in such tragedies, so try and show a little compassion or keep your harsh worded comments to yourselves.
Same goes for those that wish to send things in a downward spiral with personalised namecalling.
BOTH are unacceptable for posting here on AFF at any time - let alone Christmas Day!!
