Default Porche substitute or bad taste?

I just did an Ebay search of VW Beetle and my eye are still sore. Why would you do this to a Beetle? Do the owners really think they now look like Porche's, or is it just me that doesn't get it?

Here are the links -

Poraga?? seems to ring a bell. I thought they were crud even when I was 7yo. Also, Purvis Eureka's grrrrr : or any type of kit car with VW running gear....or pretty well any fibreglass kit. Not that I have anything against VW, i wouldn't mind a tricked out oval or split rear window beetle, or a split windscreen combi.

if for some reason i had to go in one of the beetle convertible's, the top would NOT be coming down, just in case someone saw me.

as for combi's, a good one is now rivalling a late model tarago in price. they are a great looking van i reckon.

Looks almost as good as the Excel I saw this morning with the Play School-constructed body-kit.

People should do a concept of their creation before committing...what looks good in one's head doesn't necessarily translate directly into reality.

When I was about 14 or 15, and thinking about first cars, I wanted one of those - and only tonight have I learned their name "Poraga". Then again I also wanted a VL Calais, and one of them Sigma wagons with the full on hightop roof and little spoiler.

For the record I wouldn't be seen dead in any of them these days. I'm older & wiser, and have developed much better taste.

Poraga. That's it!! Back in the day one dude I knew bought one!! He was rapt and claimed he was picking up big time with it because the girlies thought it was a Porsche. Plausible maybe, he was spending heaps of time in night clubs and to some inebriated young spunk at 3am and on the point of passing out it could be mistaken for one.

The first time he brought it around to show us he arrived so proud and left humiliated after we all took the absolute mickey out of him and the car!! He kept it for about 18 months.

What an absolute bucket of pus!!

: To do that to a DUb to make it look like a PORSCHE is a bloody disgrace. They are both classic cars. Leave "em alone. Podderick I like what you did. The one you sold looks fantastic. Keep up the good work. :

I remember seeing pictures of an old Beetle with a Rolls Royce front grafted onto it. That was also... different

Someone will get a nasty shock if they try to drive it like a Porsche!

Yes they are both classic cars but they are also actually first cousins. They have a common origin in the Czech Tatra T97 of the 1930s - followed by plagiarism and military invasion of a country. Ferdinand Porsche was a Czech who went to work in Germany and got involved in the VW project for Hitler. Somewhere in the process he helped himself to Tatra's design which turned into the VW beetle and later he went on to refine the design into the post war Porsche. Tatra undertook a long legal pursuit of VW after the war and finally got compensated in the 1960s. I think the Porsche design was probably considered too far removed for legal pursuit.

So underneath both are variants of a Czech Tatra T97:

http://www.tatra.demon.nl/cars_history_T97.htm

T97 in turn developed from T87 which has a very colourful 'political' history during the war - worth reading:
