What on earth is happening on Fraser Island ???
There's been attacks at camps, but at a barge-loading beach ? wtf ? This is not good. Poor little kid. 'A three-year-old girl has been attacked by a dingo on Fraser Island off the southern Queensland coast. The girl was mauled as she was about to board a barge with her parents around 3:00pm (AEST). Ambulance officials say the girl suffered multiple puncture wounds to her legs.' http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2...section=justin |

Aren't they a bit like hyeena's? If you're taller than them you're generally right, if you're shorter, you could have problems?
Seems like these fella's might be a bit hungry, their habitat is being encroached upon more and more...perhaps they need to figure out a way to move these dingo's to other parts of Australia...for their own good...

@sezzy,unfortunately they're the only pure breed dingo left in Australia.
There will be more to this than meets the eye, were the people involved doing something that would cause the dingo to react like that.

As far as I'm aware they're just Asian dogs that are the same as Thai village dogs and have apparently been in Australia for only four thousand years.
I'm well aware that the behaviour of stupid people has led to the 'socialisation' of wild dingoes and that that isn't the fault of the dogs, but given that shooting stupid people is frowned upon, is it not time to off a few dingoes to protect the innocent ? |

People have invaded the dingo's natural environment. People should accept that there is an element of risk.

The dingo in question will be found and put down by the Parks and Wildlife Rangers.

I don't know that they're 'bad' dogs. I guess it makes you wonder if someone walked into your home, and claimed the area as their own - how would you react? All animals are the same, including us... End of the day, they're wild animals, all dogs are. This was a little strange though, they were in a public area...

They seem to have become 'used to' human interaction, Fraser being as busy as it is, it seems they now have no fear. Which is sad, as I think they should be left be in their natural habitat, and I think the humans should just leave the island alone...then again, the tourist dollar beckons...and that is apparently more important to them than a few dogs.

Dingo's are wild, no matter the amount of human interaction, everyone should know that any dog, wild or tame can be unpredictable.

And like you said, there is definitely more than meets the eye. From my many years with Dingo's, they really keep to them selves, and they are humble. I've spent so much time with wild dingo's, they are very harmless... The most they will do is take your un attended food or blanket. Only time a Dingo will attack you is if you really provoke the ****** out of it, and thats also if the Dingo is in its group... |

Island dingoes were relocated to Aramara rather than culled (between Maryborough and Biggenden) |

i think dingoes are beautiful creatures, when i buy land, so long as i have enough back yard space for the legal enclosure, im looking to adopt a pup.
The dingo is the original dog. It is where EVERY other breed of dog has stemmed from. They are not domesticated and should be treated with caution. shame on the parents for the cause of another pointless dingo death. The purebred number of dingo is really dwindling, this is definately a shame.

I was on Fraser around 10 years ago (a week after the Olympic torch went through as the track was still nicely graded) with a bunch of Uni friends. I can't remember where we stayed specifically (as in, the name) but we were in these modern looking 3-4 bedroom houses made with timber and corrugated iron. There was a cluster of them, at the top of a windy, steep road.
At the bottom of that road was the eating hall, a bar and eventually the water and the dock.... One night, after a dinner and a few drinks myself and a friend decided to head back. It was pretty late, and we had just missed the shuttle van that takes people up and down the steep road. We thought, bugger it, we will walk it. After around 200 metres we stopped for a breather half way up the slope. I heard some rustling... I couldn't believe it, but we had been stalked by 4 or 5 dingoes in the scrub along the road. I had heard them a few min earlier but couldn't see them, and pretended to not hear them or the girl I was walking up with would have freaked. I can still remember it, looking through the scrub and watching them stare back... I kept my cool and suggested that we just walk back down and wait for the next bus, as we were both a little merry and tired from a busy day. Walking back, they tracked us back another 20-30 metres then that was the end of it. The whole time the girl I was walking with didn't know, nor did I tell her. I was only on Fraser for 3 or 4 nights, but saw many people feeding the dingoes and leaving food out for them for that perfect photo opportunity.... Shame this has happened to the little girl.. |

The dingos are attacking people because they are starving.
National Parks wont cull them because too many people get up in arms so they are slowly starving to death as they are over populated. Then tourists feed the dingos which gets them used to getting food. There is a number of factors at play here and none the dogs fault. |

A lot of dogs will recognise small children as being small animals, therefor they think it (the child) is food....
Our pure bred dingos will soon be the way of the dodo.... we are continually reducing our bush, moving into their habitat and destroying their source of food. Much like every other creature on this continent. If it was a Koala that gouged the eye of a child (as a far fetched example) or Wallabie, would the media have jumped on the bandwagon? Would there be a call to cull them? Would they be labelled dangerous and people screaming for their death? My previous dog had some dingo in her and she was the best dog i had. Having cuddled an alpine dingo at the local billabong sanctuary i can tell you it was one heck of an experience!

I enjoyed last night's South Park 'Nascar' episode more than thinking about dingoes ......
But then, I'm a sick (non-dingo) puppy. |

Theres been a few bites (attacks) on the Island over recent years. Some have had independent witnesses who have stated that no-one provoked it, the Dingoes just attacked. Its in their instinct, if they think they can pull it off, or are desperate. It is what they do, hunt and eat. The size thing is a myth, as in if youre taller they wont attack. Obviously theres a point where they think better of it, but if they can come up behind you, they will. Ive seen them chase large roos when there is enough Dingoes. Just as hyenas will go after antelope that are much larger. Obviously like all predators, the easier target is usually the best target. Apparently if the roos enter the water, the Dingoes wont go after them as the roo has the upper hand and can easily drown them.

Theres a limit to the number that the Island can properly maintain. Theres a limit to how many would be there without mans influence. When that number is in imbalance, the cull becomes not only necessary, but humane, and ecologically sound. Its the same as roos on farms. If the farm didnt exist, there would be less roos in that area. They breed based on food supply and large areas of grass like crops will result in an overpopulation. When the crop is harvested, they have nothing to eat and they starve. The crop is a business and cant simply be allowed to be eaten either, the farmer isnt growing kangaroo food. |

Seems like a timely reminder for parents to be a little more vigilant on the island. Although from the article, I gather the incident may not have even occurred had the witness not yelled out for someone else, but chased the dingo's off himself...just my 0.02 though...

THe dog being destroyed just proves that people continue to refuse to take any responsibility...
I might go to Australia Zoo, get my leg chomped by a crocodile (despite the signs saying not to jump in) and sue them for failing to erect an electric fence with armed guards...

How sad it is that the dingos got shot, while the parents of an un-attended 3yr old dont even get a slap on the wrist???
What the hell is wrong with this country?
