If the car is in NSW the RTA website has a vehicle check that is free it gives info about current vehicle status and other general stuff. If you pay the extra $20 or so it will make available the complete history including how many previous owners and any damage or write off status. My daughter was looking to buy a Rav4 we paid the $2o bucks and found 2 cars that were priced at 15k were infact repairable write offs. Surely Vic has a similar system.
