Yesterday while driving on a rural road near home I was overtaken by a ute on double lines while another car was approaching in the opposite direction, ten seconds later while still on double lines with a blind corner coming up he overtook the semi in front of me.
I captured the whole event on my dashcam, including his rego. Today I took the photographs to my local police sergeant, she was most interested and said she would contacting the driver and be having a "chat ". Did I do the right thing?

100% absolutely.
The sooner these inconsiderate drivers are taken off the roads before they take out innocent law abiding citizens the better.

Reckon you did the right thing.
Just a tip to save you some keystrokes - on the internet you don't need to ask whether you did the right thing or not...just post what you did and you will get plenty of feedback soon enough. |

Yep what if they hit someone coming the other way next time and you said nothing.
How bad would you feel then.

Yep, big thanks to you. I wish I could have done that tonight with the clown on the way home from work. Overtaking on the left through left turn lanes and swerving all over the road, I missed their rego.

Great for having a dash cam, you're using it for what it's meant for- road safety,
yours and mine. Just now I have received my new dash cam to catch idiots like this. I'm not a dobber by any means, but blatant stupidity needs to be dealt with accordingly. As said above, it's a fatality waiting to happen. |

Good move. The more of these death-wish drivers we can get off the road the better for all of us. Even Commodore owners...

With out knowing, I would say no, he wasn't. Purely based on the other drivers further act of overtaking a truck on double Linda around s blind corner. The other driver was likely speeding as well as being a complete twat.

so, playing devils advocate, perhaps it there was more room than the OP thought, perhaps the blind corner wasn't blind, perhaps the OP was doing 20 under, perhaps, perhaps, perhaps....
we're not the cops nor vigilantes. plenty of nobheads on the road - if you are going to dob them all in you are going to be very busy. |

No! I was actually going faster than him until I became stuck behind the truck.
When he caught up to me he didn't slow down but overtook straightaway over the double lines, cut back in to avoid an approaching car, then without slowing at all overtook the semi on the blind corner. I have no idea weather he was familiar with the road at all but I knew that half a Km on there was a long section were one could safely overtake and one Km further on there was an overtaking lane. The road has a 100kph limit but many travel faster. If I had been close behind the truck instead of 50 metres back he might have attempted to pass us both in one go, in that case he might not have been able to avoid the oncoming car.

You might have done the right thing. The only issue I would have is the nanny state Australia is becoming, isn't helped if we all play police officer. However in your instance it was probably the right thing

Yes, you did the right thing.
If this particular flog killed or injured someone further up the road your evidence is GOLD to the prosecution. Dangerous driving is not to be taken lightly, it is a criminal act. The charge will be easier to make stick with the length of time said flog is proven to be driving like a tool.

I live in rural area. For many many years we have good stretchs to pass on.
Then some good doer desides that we need doudle yellows and drop speed limit 20km. Oh yeah speed kills didnt forget. I still pass on the new double yellow lines. But when i can see good. They make these changes cause some people r hopeless. I would be ****ed if someone took it unpon themselves and dobbed me in. |

The only people who would think you did the wrong thing are drop kicks and bogans who want to get away with this stuff.
It's not like it was something trivial, like speeding up to 130 on a straight to pass quickly and safely. If the oncoming car had to brake or drive on the shoulder due to the overtaking car then they deserve to be dobbed in. As for overtaking on a blind corner, well what can you say. |
