Iraq death: wrong body returned

The body of the first Australian soldier to be killed in Iraq was scheduled to arrive in Melbourne this morning, but in what the Defence Department says is a "terrible mistake", the wrong body has been returned.

The body of Private Jake Kovco is due to be given a service in Gippsland with full military honours, but the coffin that arrived in Melbourne this morning contained the wrong body.

rofl so much for that millitary efficiency they reckon they have. Maybe someone should have crossed the "T's" and dotted the "i's"?

It like above or the media caught wind of a body being brought back and just assumed it was him. I wouldn't put is past the media.

The casket they showed on the news being unloaded off the plane was a wooden one!

Not the type our first fallen serviceman would be returned in...
Should have seen the look on the guys(guy unloading) face when he realised what was wrong.

Not supporting the military (Well maybe a little) but, apparantley it was a civilian morgue/transport stuff up. Having said that, it does'nt matter who stuffed up, the Australian Army holds the responsibility to ensure that at the least, the proper remains are returned to the family. What a Cluster Fu*k!!!

It's not our fault they screwed up. Now they whome ever they maybe? Look like fools. I'm sure his family aren't happy about it but it's know common knowledge a screw up happened. Now it's happened the reasons it happened can be recified. This way the process doesn't happen again.

No one's even mentioned his wifes life. We are discussing a military bungle or media screw up. Only you brought the wife into it but thats off topic. Unfortunately the poor bloke made a simple mistake. I've always been taught never to clean a loaded gun. Being military personel, I thought they'd be taught the same. I guess not?

We all make mistakes at times. It's a part of being human. A know it all at work managed to make an error with a chainsaw and nearly take his foot off. Mistakes happen, thats life.

This is what happens when they contract stuff out to business entities. I say let the Army run all aspects of their operations and budget them for this.

my heart goes out to not only the family, friends and colleagues of the Australian guy but the family etc of the person who was sent to a foreign country...

terrible tragedy that all these people should not be suffering, we should spare a thought for those all connected to this mess.

They are taught not to clean a loaded weapon.

I overheard my bosses talking about it, they are retired WO's.
Had he survived, he would have been charged with unauthorised discharge....
Or something to that effect.

But now it is reported that he didnt shoot himself.
Im sure there'll be an inquiry which will reveal the truth...

Anyway, back on topic.

Couldnt have agreed more, the army is very efficent, they dont have to worry about making money or meeting budgets they just get the job done. take the catering corps for example, since the catering corps was scaled back and private companies have taken over the level of food in the mess has gone to e, the old army cooks would load up ya plate with piles of great food, the catering compmay limits you to single serves and no second.

Anyway if a private company is responsible they should be copping it not the army or government.

I admit there was a bungle in the system somewhere, but who in Australia want the government, whether it be in form of the military or contractors, want to get a lot of practice in shipping home the bodies of our boys???

Become like the Yanks with Cargo planes full of coffins? I don't think so.

I understand there is still questions surrounding the incident, and yes, it is a terrible accident, but happens and live goes on (before I get flamed, I know guys who have been killed unexpectedly as well)
