The difference between American car manufacturers, is the americans somewhat listen to their customers feedback. The Australians in some of these companies have the "we'll build what we think is best and they'll buy anything" attitude. That attitude works short term.

The American manufacturers have bigger budgets, due to a much larger market. Ford of Australia and Holden have to get their budgets from the American headquarters. They've always had to cope with fewer resources. That's how subsidiaries work.
