Mal Michael to join Bombers
Friday, November 24, 2006 Essendon Football Club today confirmed it had reached agreement on a two-year deal with former Brisbane player Mal Michael and that it would be taking him with its first selection (second overall) in the pre-season draft. The 29-year-old, three-time Premiership player will commence training with Essendon in mid-December. Michael has played 201 games for Collingwood and Brisbane. "We believe he has a lot of football still left in him and his move back to Melbourne has caused him to re-think his retirement. We think he can be a very important player for us for at least the next couple of years," Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy said. "He will provide us with some real strength and experience in defence while we continue to develop some of our younger players for key defensive roles. Physically he is in very good condition and the time away has freshened him up mentally." |

If Brisbane people got shitty with Aker for accepting the door when it was shown too him, What will they think of big mal cheating the lions out of some type of deal for him? Little bit of disrespect there i feel. But good luck too the bombers they got him cheap.

Just makes me realise just how much of a pack of sooky whingers Brisbane are. They cry because they are "disadvantaged" by their location so they get salary cap benefits, they sook about Aker leaving (can you blame him) and now they put in a complaint ot the AFL because Essendon was lucky enough to be able to entice Mal Michael to come out of retirement. Well screw you Brisbane Lions the rest of the league has had enough of your whinging an moaning now that you are no longer on top of the ladder, get over it.

Firstly, they wanted Aker to leave. I don't recall Brisbane sooking about him leaving when in fact, they couldn't get rid of him quick enough. Secondly, Mal Michael had one more year of his contract to run with Brisbane. Michael notified Brisbane that he was going to retire and because of that Brisbane delisted him. Brisbane has every right to fight this because if he hadn't claimed he was retiring he would still have a year to run on his contract. I agree with you on the salary cap, they should not get benefits - as shown by the fact that 11 Queensland players were picked up in the draft today. A significant proportion of those were in the top 30 as well. But look at the facts with regards to Aker and Michael.

Brisbane still wanted him to leave, the cheap shots they took weren't because they wanted him to stay.
The Michael situation was delicate, accommodating a veteran of the game means nothing if you can't be convinced that he is going to actually have the heart to give his all. The fact that he wasn't going to train a lot is important in the game these days. Chris Langford trained in Sydney with a club side (IIRC) and played for Hawthorn towards the end of his career, but it was a different game back then. In the end the Lions must not have been convinced that Michael was going to add value to the team by restricting his training, but regardless Michael posted his resignation, possibly as a way of getting out of his contract in an unethical manner.

I can definately see where Brisbane are coming from, BUT STUFF EM, for too long they had too many concessions. I am a very happy Bombers fan.
