Got up this morning to my fuel filler cap ripped off and the cap hanging.
went and got keys to see how much fuel they had flogged as we had just put in a heap in yesterday, lucky for us they got none or very little. We have the new shape focus. looks like they had ripped the flap off first but the inner plastic door also covers the cap so they broke that, but cause it is hard to fill it must be hard to get it out

In one respect that's why I don't mind having a non-locking fuel cap. At least there will be no damage.

Happened to me a couple of years ago with my old Fairlane, in my driveway the night I'd just filled the tank............they were generous enough to leave me enough fuel to get to just get to the servo (only 50 or so meters down the road) in the morning lol.

Hmmmm I'm suspecting this is happening in my area too - and I'm being serious here but my Falcon's fuel consumption doesn't match with how much fuel is disappearing frm the tank. I don't have leak but a quick diag of the motor has revealed nothing is broken, ECU reports fuel usage in the expected range BUT somehow the fuel disappears.
Is it possible to steal fuel in Falcons without leaving a trace of the crime?

What why not? If its a non-lockable cap then why not? Once you've taken the fuel just close the cap again. Impossible to know if petrols been stolen or not...and yes this is reguarly happening in my area! Woken up 3-4 times in past 6 months to find both my cars and missus' car has been drained..very very frustrating! :@

Don't be fooled into thinking that a locking fuel cap will save you though, I've gone through all the ones I have at work (brand new) and managed to open about 12 of them (all different part numbers too) with the same key. And if you dont have a key a screwdriver can get them off fairly easily too.

The tank on my bike got drained out the front of my GF's house the other night. The pricks had the cheek to leave enough in the reserve and turn the tap to Reserve and as the tank was only half full when i left it i didn't even notice anything odd. Got out on the highway and bike just died. Half a km walk to the servo across 4 lanes of traffic wasn't fun but could have been worse. Now i always check before riding off!!

I had someone try to steal fuel out of my car a few years ago. Being an EA Ghia, it still uses the same fuel door as a GL (with the little finger hole) but can only be opened via the button on the dash. Anyway, someone obviously forced it open using the finger hole which resulted in a big crack across the fuel door. They got no fuel out of it, but the fuel door was stuffed

I told him to get the hell away from the ute ... but I was so close to laughing at him though. Thank God for LPG and one-way valves.

Locking fuel caps are up there with Lock Nuts for wheels, Club Locks for steering wheels etc etc. A detterent is all they are. Most people would know this already.
And if you think a thief would open a fuel door and see a locking cap and just say "Oh Damn, cant get none out of this", you need to wake up to yourself. Thats my 2c worth anyways. |

You might notice i said dumb criminals. I even bold and underlined it. You must have missed it. Yes i do think a locking fuel cap will deter dumb criminals. I would consider anyone that needs to steal fuel dumb. I would also call anyone that rubbishes people for trying everything they can to protect themselves dumb. |

I would prefer to give them the easiest access to the fuel. Replacing $30 worth of juice is cheaper than having to repair any damage they do to your car trying to get a locked cap off.

I don't understand why you are getting personal. The mere point im trying to make is, we should all try and take every precaution to protect ourselves and our prized posessions. You told everyone how to get around 1 of those precautions which i think is irresponsible. |
