I need to see a copy of the vin number for a ute i want to buy for the ADR numbers so i know what build date i can import to the uk but so far nobody wants to do it.

I can see their reasoning though as it sounds dodgy.

I get providing vin no's if you purchased 2 damaged Hyundai Get's & use 1 to repair the other. But I have accumulated a collection of spares for my car (just in case) & have no vin details of the cars they have come from. How would I & many others get on selling these parts if we chose? I know i didn't steal them but can't prove this to any prospective buyer.

You can sell them and use them until your little heart is content ....... BUT

If you want to use them for the purpose of reviving a VIV, Vin numbers need to be provided for various major parts which has been stated above. As someone buying these parts for this purpose really does need to know what is required. That is the end of the story.

If anyone doesn't want to give the Vin number, that's their perogitive but no harm can come of it but you may not be able to sell to a very small %. That is all. Has NOTHING to do with selling parts privately or stock piling for selling or using down the track.

You aren't obligated ..... but you can do the right thing by him. If you don't want to ..... your decision but I feel for the bloke as it is a dead easy thing to give for no threat of anything. Being up front with you? He asked for the Vin the car came off?

The bloke might not have known, he does now and will be more careful when buying. I don't know what you are afraid of though. Can go down to Woolworths now and collect a couple of dozen Vins in 5 minutes from BA's. He hasn't asked for your PIN number?

When getting a car off the register and getting it back into a RWC state ..... yes there are some hurdles to jump and for obvious reasons. The car was written off for a reason! It only relates to these circumstances and really really isnt that hard.

Wreckers are required to provide and keep paperwork of VINs for wrecks that meet the crusher

To the op - you are being extraordinarily difficult for such a trivial thing

Can't believe the mindset of some on here

As long as they have the previous owners name, address, phone numbers, reciept, vin numbers and the right to ring you up and ask you questions to prove you did own it?

Maybe hassle you and ask you why you sold the parts and is your vehicle now a wreck?.

He is thinking about his vehicle and im thinking about mine, what if a vic buys my car in the future and it says i dont have the right bumper?does it mean i canot sell to a victorian in the future without dramas?

Rather stay out of that one..

You have taken me wrong with what I said.
My plates are all over the net as well.
I have no fear about a roadworth as my junk is all engineered and legit.
Not paranoid about where I live. Cars are driven daily and parked in the front yard.
What I was saying about quoting of plates in spotted threads possibly causing issues is if you were "spotted" parked out the back of the polly waffle , going for a run up the coast when according to work you were sick etc.
There has to be a little privacy about. As I said I see him giving the parts buyer a VIN number causing less issues then any of the above can cause.

Your thinking waaaaaaay too deeply into it.
He is not rebirthing a car.
Your VIN will not be listed on any register. They will go through the paperwork , check that your car isnt stolen or written off , pass the guys car as repaired and then take your receipt and precious VIN to the dunny and use it as wiping paper.
They want to know the ins and outs of a chooks rear nowdays to shut down the midnight spares industry which one day will protect all of our cars better.
You wont even get a phone call about it.
VINs mean nothing at the end of the day. I needed a VIN to order parts from a dealer to do a brake upgrade on my 4x4. Nissan cant even find the listing for the required bolts etc on their computers without a VIN due to the vast range of different models. 5 minutes on eBay had me a VIN for the required model so the parts could be found and ordered.

Probably becuase you asked the question ....... Is there any harm giving out your Vin number to strangers? ..... and even though it has been shown that the VIN is not anything important to anyone, only an ID tag for that particular car, can be obtained in a matter of seconds if required, cannot be used by anyone else for any other purpose, cannot be used to rebirth another car, cannot be duplicated as only 1 Vin per car allowed, has no harm in being provided, less importants than a rego number plate, may be required when reviving a written off vehicle ....... you had already decided that the poor bloke who did not know about this until he forked out quite a few $$$ now has to sell it (or provide another Vin number) to someone else and then buy another with a Vin provided ........ ???? Just a thought.

Well he should have been upfront and i would have sold to someone else instead of comming clean with his car rebirthing issues after the sale was finalized.

Its just a bumper.

Seriously, what harm will it do? It's up to you wether you wish to provide it or not. Clearly you don't wish to, so just state you don't want to give out your VIN unless it's to VicRoads directly...

Starting to wonder about the origins of your ebay sale parts..
