"A Queensland man has given a sweet, back-handed apology to carmaker Jeep after he called his a car "a lemon" and destroyed it with much fanfare.
Ashton Wood bought a new Jeep in 2010 that he said had 21 faults and had to be towed four times before it had even clocked 50,000 km. The Sunshine Coast man tried to sort things out with the carmaker through the Office of Fair Trading before it ended up in the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal, but Jeep defended the case. Fed up and going nowhere with Jeep, Mr Wood decided to run a crowd-funding campaign to raise money to help him destroy the car and recoup some costs. But Jeep had made a counter claim against Mr Wood in the case, demanding he apologise for bad mouthing the company. "The funny part of this was in the court documents, Jeep told me I had to apologise for them for the things I said about the company and their vehicle," Mr Wood told the Courier-Mail. April 11, 2015: A Sunshine Coast couple started a Kickstarter campaign to destroy their Jeep riddled with defaults. "They wanted an apology in The Australian Financial Review!" "I ended up getting in touch with The Checkout and they did up this fantastic public apology." The mea culpa delivered through social media simply highlighted all the problems with the car and ended with the blow: "But most of all I'm sorry 'I bought a Jeep.'" "I have not heard a word from them at all – not a word," Mr Wood said, who now drives a RAV4." Read more at http://www.9news.com.au/national/201...rWhyHSPyo9r.99

If Jeep really demanded an apology it's s company I wouldn't go near with a long pole, just on attitude alone. If that's their attitude, then it could come out in any dealings you have with them. On top of the stories about faults and spare parts prices I can't understand why people buy them.
Mind you, that guy might have gone from the frying pan to the fire with a RAV4. When Wheels managed to roll a Kluger during a road test, Toyota's response was not to admit that something could be wrong with the car's stability but to get all litigious, iirc suggesting they would take action against anybody who rolled a Kluger! This sort of thing separates the sheep from the goats among manufacturers. |

I was considering a Jeep Grand Cherokee on a short list of cars of this type.
Looks good on paper and appearance. However these cars are renown for bad build, high defects (apparently electrical and others) and further backed up by a company that behaves this way. I won't be saying I'm sorry I bought a Jeep - won't be buying one. They are selling 1000+ of these things a month - not sure if they every accounted for what it means to provide parts, service and customer support to perpetuate this success. Good luck to them - they will need it for what may be a disaster recovery of what could have been a glorious sales and brand success story. |

Funny thing about this is if Jeep had given him a replacement vehicle then nobody would be none the wiser. With the tack they have taken the whole bloody world will know and they will lose sales over it!
Some companies, go figure... |

Jeeps are pretty good these days but the attitude of the Australian head office was despicable, but might be changing worth the new boss and their spare parts prices are even worse.
But I know this and still went with them. |

I realize you can get a lemon in any brand, but this has just cemented my decision to never buy a Jeep.

Yes I saw the program - great story
How silly of companies these days of social media treating their customers like mugs. VW learned the hard way and so will Jeep. |

Whats the deal with Consumer Law in this case? Surely it should have protected Mr Wood and he would be entitled to a refund or replacement. Or is it different for car purchases?

I would have liked to seen the look on Jeeps CEO face when he read the apology given.

Australia do need Lemon Laws. I mean if you have a mobile and the same thing fails 3 times on it you get a new one. Why shouldn't it be the same thing with a car. The video posted above does sorta go into it but you get the impression its difficult to get a replacement.

He didn't listen. I gave him a twenty and wrote buy a ford on the side pillar. Pathetic what he went through. It stuffed a fuel line in there driveway on the day of purchase. Didn't even make 20 Metres before The dramas started.
Facebook destroy my jeep if you don't know the story

If JEEP wern't so stiffed necked about this, and probably replaced the JEEP vehicle for the customer they wouldn't have all this bad publicity. Also they could have used the DEFECT vehicle for their apprentices to pull apart and put together......

He refused, but he managed to get $18K of donations from the public for the demolition. I'm not going to defend Jeep here too much as surely they could have worked something out. but a couple of points. This Jeep would have been made in the US Toledo plant which is now closed. probably one of the last production runs. from what I've read they were junk The Current Jeep Grand Cherokee is made at the Jefferson plant and is an entirely different beast since the takeover of Chrysler by Fiat. Just saying I wouldn't judge todays Jeeps on Mr Woods experience

The quality and reliability problems with the vehicle were one thing, but it was the response from Jeep (ie lack of response) that was the real problem.

Really. VW seem to be going fine and they were denying the problems they had. A person even died as a result.
Then there is Toyota not fixing a known problem for a long time and resulting in 9 people being killed. Jeep will be fine.

The car sales industry hasn't changed at all over the last 20 years , only the products have due to buyer demands and needs.
One thing I did realize when I bought my 2014 Terry was that the sales folk were not car enthusiasts at all and their knowledge of product was laughable. When I did parts and service 20 years ago all those employed were CAR enthusiasts. It's the GENUINE passion for the product being sold that ensures it success from the design- construct to sales

Of course they'll be fine, I never said they would go broke.. But this has to effect sales. People who might have thought about a Jeep are now thinking twice. Keep doing this sort of thing over a long period of time & it adds up.. Just saying.

jeep arnt too bad - they are currently offering a free trip to the united states with every 2015 grand cherokee radiator purchase............ sort of.
its $1500 bucks here but i can get it for $300 in the US. So i can get flights for $1200 fly there and buy it and come home for the same money. if it works out i was thinking about writing an article about it and my travels and submitting it to the car mags (unless jeep wanted to buy it first.... hehehehe) it will also be quicker and better service as I have rung twice for availability here to 2 dealers and none have got back to me. Note to jeep - Any emplyee that you give a company car too (a jeep) force them to just go to normal dealers to buy it, service it and repair it - just like a normal person. you will get an insight into your business that will blow your mind!!!!!! |
