It could've been caused by a lot of things. Ie. something you used when washing the car went into a hairline fracture, causing it to expand in that and *bang* Chemicals can do funny things. The hairline fracture may not have even been noticeable.. It could've been there as far back as when the glass was originally manufactured and not treated properly.........
But I'm crapping on now, soooo yeah!

Interesting how the area on both sides of the window is badly broken up, I wonder if there was some bending in the hatch frame that caused it?

It is probably most common on shower screens. Where on a cold morning or night, hot water is turned on and the glass explodes. If you read the fine print off the shower screen company they will not cover the glass exploding, but they will cover poor quality glass. Its a fine line between the two.
Sucks about your rear window though.

I don't believe the temperature differential explanation because I've lived in Europe where there's some pretty extreme conditions and I've never seen it there. Always parked outside and would have the heater etc on with ice or snow on the window. I'd be inclined to think it was substandard glass or some unknown episode introducing a weakness that later fails.
Same with exploding shower screens - some manufacturers will really come up with BS to cover a substandard product.
