As Jac said, my fave at the moment is Amstel. It's expensive, but damn it's good! Used to like Crown, and other Victroian rubbish, but I grew up, moved out (now live in Adelaide) and experienced Beer in the big wide world.

Boags Premium would have to be the best Aussie beer I've had that hasn't come in limited batches. Cascade premium is also very nice. My budget beer would Tooheys extra dry, never liked anything Tooheys till I had this. Clean and crisp taste.

Coopers Heritage ale was also brilliant. Pity it's not sold anymore. I only ever found it at one place, being the Windy Point restaraunt. Most people eveb in SA hadn't heard of it and thought I was talking about vintage ale, which IMO doesn't hold a candle to the heritage ale.

Imported beer would be Amstel as mentioned before, Grolsch, Becks and I am also quite partial to Tiger beer. I wouldn't consider myself a beer expert at all, so I'm still learning about new beers all the time. This thread definitely helps, and I'm damn curious to try a stubby of this Hoegaarden stuff now.

No, because they're all garbage.
Sticking a gold label on with "Australia's Finest" does not make a good beer. It is what is inside that counts. Wish CUB would remember that.
Becks and Heineken are now brewed in Australia, not imported so in reality, you're only drinking a CUB or Lion Nathan beer in a Becks or Heineken bottle. Same goes with Carlsberg and Stella Artois.

Repeat, if you like Coopers Stout, try Abbotsford Invalid Stout. It's got a better taste by far and is about the same cost.

If Crownies are you pick of the amber fluid, you frankly need to get out and try more beer. You might as well drink a keg of chemicals and impurities if you want Crownies.

But each to their own,

Hmm beers for people who like to think they know a good beer, or want to be seen as they do anyway.

Hard to go past Coopers, or any Cascade really.

There are so many good beers out there, instead of buying a six pack or whatever I usually buy 6 different beers.

Theres only one real way to find out!

For the sake of the poll, Carlton would be my choice; goes down very easily.

It's a nice flavour, but it's not nearly as hoppy or bitter as the Coopers, and doesn't have the same body and mouthfeel.

Not a bad beer though..

Uranium Death... thanks for recommending the Coopers Sparkling.. I downed a 6 pack of it before going out last night and it has quite a kick! Didn't realise it was 5.8% until i was done. Not a bad drop might i add, however, i think most chicks would find it too strong - even i found it a bit powerful.

Yeah. But I was like that. I lived on Cascade Light but moved on to Aussie Lagers, but I find them a bit plain so I am big on Ales.
The best advice I can give is if possible, quit going to Woolworths Liquor (or equivalent) and go to a specialist drinks shop. They tend of have some better stuff.
Try a bit of this and bit of that. Used to hate stout...now I love 'em. So try as much as you can. There are a lot of excellent beers out there at reasonable prices.

The best beer is FREE BEER! Other than that its pretty hard to beat the 36 can West End shack pack for $40. If you want to be a bit more classy theres no need to go further than coopers sparkling.

There's no need to start flaming people because they drink a different sort of beer.

My vote also goes to Becks and Heinekens. Also Asahi, Kirin, Corona and Carlsberg Elephant.

Oh and don't forget Stella.

The japs make some pretty good beer, Kirin is probably the best if you don't include sapporo (ludicrously expensive). But for my money Grand Ridge hatlifter stout is the best beer you can get for any price

You're correct. Each to their own.

But mate, Becks and Heineken that you buy now are not even Becks and Heineken. They're just cheaper beers put in a labeled bottle. No longer imported.

Secondly (in response to another), if VB is vaginal backwash, then Corona is donkey urine. Do you know why the whole "Lemon in the bottle" thing happens? Because there's flies everywhere in Mexico, and the lemon keeps the flies out. It is not a quality beer. Overpriced.

Corona...when you hate beer, but you want a beer.

I still say that in Australia, Coopers, Grand Ridge, JAmes Squire and Cascade offer great value. Mildura Brewing Co. are ok with some things, and Gage Roads also make some ok stuff too.
