I guess they are trying to disable some of the cylinders for better cruise economy, like the new hondas and jeeps.

Years ago in Formula 1,this reminds me of several Ferrari retirements which were described as "electrical problems". Mechanics would give the lie to this saying things like "yes, it was an electrical problem. A conrod went through the block and knocked the distributor off!"

Wasn't this exact explanation given by George Fury back in the turbo bluebird days when the L18 engine went bang ....? |

Similar to a Yamaha 175 outboard one of my mates had many years ago, wouldn't start due to the conrod lodged in the starter motor.
New bottom end under warranty, $11,000 in 1990 money Regards, Tote

hi guys. this thread reminded of some advice i needed. im guessing that theres a good chance that the motor went kaboom due to lack of oil. now, being new to the boat scene, ive just recently purchased a boat with an outboard which has oil injection. my brother suggested i dont use this auto oiling system. instead i should premix fuel and just run that. his reasoning was that in case the oil feeders or similar get blocked or fail, my engine will still be lubed.
ps. panelvanman im not trying to hijack ur thread, i just think you might be one to answer my queries. cheers.

it all depends on the motor and the system been used with it.
the motor should have an oil warning alarm that will tell you when oil is not pumping or is low... OMC engines (johnson and evinrude) 2 stroke engines have what is called a VRO oil/fuel pump. it has been given a nickname in the industry as a Very Rearly Operates pump, because it fails often. if you have one of these engines, get it looked at and see if it is working. the oil systems are there to serve a purpose and they do actually vary the amount of oil that is delivered to the engine, it can vary from 50:1 and below to 100:1. if you run at 50:1 the engine will be smokier than it is now hope that helps mate cheers brendan

The best thing about Oil Injection is a lack of Oil Smoke, as the engine is always properly oiled presuming the OI System works. My next boat is going to be a 4 Stroke if only so I don't have to worry about Oil.
