Default e10 Premium, anybody used it?

Well, our trusted Caltex Servo just down the road has closed, and a new "Freedom" servo has opened up.

Only thing is, it only has e10 unleaded, e10 Premuim and Diesel.

Has anybody used this e10 Premium? What octane level does it have?

As you can gather from my user name I am more a home with a computer keyboard than a set of spanners. My mechanic advised me to be very carefull with ethanol additives. Apparently he is of the opinion that some of the plastics used in fuel systems of some cars are easily disolved by ethanol and as a result there is a real risk of the electrics in the fuel system causing a vehicle fire. He suggested that we (5 drivers and 4 cars in the family) check with the different manufacturers for compatability with ethanol prior to using any, otherwise we could have a major problem.

Ring 13FORD if your worried, but it says all Falcons from 1985 can run e10. The BA ran it for 18 months and ran better then on non e10 petrol.

I've been getting ok results from e10 95. However last week I had half a tank left of e10 and filled it up with regular 95 and it ran like a dog with terrible economy. No idea why. It feels the same on Ultimate 98 as well though. Bad economy and poorer driving feel.

One explanation is that alcohol is addictive _2:

Seriously speaking, mixing E10 and non-alcohol blended petrol will promote phase separation from all that water absorbed by ethanol. Petrol in presence of separated water will have lower octane rating. You can get a lot water into your tank if you often run on half-empty or less tank with long intervals between refuels.

I've been running United E10 (i think it's 95RON) for the past yr, And doing the calcs from km driven to L put in, there's a small decrease in L used per 100km and this is from a car that the web site suggests not to run the fuel. I have also put the United 98E10 in but as there was no real diff, couldn't justify the Xtra $$.

It can chew through some of the plastic and rubber components I think but nothing severely, I seriously doubt the engine fire but you never know.
With only 10% Ethanol you should be safe.

You need to check your vehicle is E10 compatible just to be sure. Higher levels of Ethanol (ie higher than 10%) can dissolve rubber components in your fuel system unless they are specifically designed for >10% ethanol.

Main prob with ethanol fuels is its water attracting ability. Do you really know how much water is building up in your servo's E10 fuel tanks, particularly older tanks?

Does anyone know if / when they are going to be releasing E85 here?

I would love to get some of that stuff in my tank.

As posted in another thread, apparently its already in NSW and will be in other states soon, but unless your car is specifically built/tuned to run E85 you're better off not.

Mustve missed that thread.

Do you know approx when it will b released in Vic?

Its for a turbo motor which ill be upgrading the fuel system for anyway, so it isnt an issue to run it for me.

it has already been released in this country, problem is that there isn't that much around.

But apparently Holden is releasing an e85 vehicle.

This is the servos way of cleaning the water that may seep into their own tanks plus being paid to do it. The customers pay and take it away with a little bit in every tank full.

I saw an E80 or E90 car driving around Canberra last time I was there. Damn that must be cheap to fill up

When I had the TX5, I was running it on regular 95 and United E10 95 (moreso E10) - it was doing a bit better than regular 91 and on par with 95, but then the fuel pump died :\

I've started putting Mobil E10 in the Fairmont and when I come across a United servo (the one near my closed), I'll try out the E10 95 again... not that I use ULP any more as I've got LPG

Back to the original question, E10 95/98 is fine, but TBH, I don't trust 'Freedom' servos.

Pretty simple, dont skimp out a coupla bucks on a full tank for ethanol.
You might save a couple of $$ - like 2, but you'll soon notice the kms out of a tank are not what they used to be.

Yeah obviously fuel consumption is higher, but it has a higher octane rating.

Tune your motor for ethanol= more power.

From what ive read, those that are using it have reported that the fuel consumption negates any cost savings you might have with the lower price, but it is basically a cheap race fuel and has more benefits for a performance car.

In adelaide E85 has just dropped to 124.9 whilst unleaded today was 142.9. Considering its about a 20-30% increase in fuel consumption you're probably losing money if anything.

The guys here that have tuned their cars to run on E85 are struggling to get the same results they would on PULP anyway. Its not showing great results. Higher octane doesn't necessarily mean more power.

Have used the 95 and 98 for nearly three years, never had a problem, in fact I think they are great, I make good power from them, they dont pingon my generic tunes, they give good times at the track and I still get 600-700 k's to a tank.

Give it a go mate. If you dont' like it, at least you can add your own opinion to this thread.

I haven't used standard (non-ethanol) fuel in my car for a few years now. My parents have been using ethanol (e10) on their falcon for at least 8 years now..North Queensland has had it for quite a while longer than other places.

I've seen no ill side effects and economy is the same if not better than some other blends out there (depends on servo).

Just on a side note....I think that I saw you on Saturday FordAce. You were coming from the Alderly round about heading into town.

I was beside you and behind for a fair bit. I was in the wife's white Lexus however.
The Siciliano sticker got my attention.

Views aren't facts. Prior to the "rule" that servos had to advertise the fact that their fuel contains ethanol, plenty of fuel blends used ethanol to bump the octane rating up anyway. So about 5 years ago, if you used PULP, there was every chance you were using an ethanol blend.

Ethanol at up to 20% blend is fine for our cars (anything post 1985). In higher concentrations, like E85, that's where you need special fuel system components to cope with the effects of ethanol on things like plastics and rubber.

running 100 octane that uses 5% etho, the XR runs like a dream. I've said this on another thread, the car is a delight to drive. Response is better and overall a lot smoother. I believe it has something to do with advancing the timing given the higher octane. Only thing is at 189cents a litre, I cant justify it. It was bad enough at 159 cents. Oh and this price is fixed, doesnt change like all the other fuels. Guess its cause its the only 100 octane on the market.
