Today i was working doing a catalogue drop for my boss and i heard sirens wailing around the block for about 5 minutes and saw nothing then wen crossing the road i looked both ways.
A VR SS commodore went flying past doing way over 160km/h followed by 9 cop cars. the VR SS missed me by no more than 4-5ft epicly close. the place was then crawling with police so we decided to move the drop to a different suburb and then it happened again same car followed by yet more coppers. The point, The VE couldn't catch the VR in a straight line making me think that SA needs some serious pursuit cars like NSW and QLD. I think an XR6T or an HSV etc has a place in the police force. In the same way that British traffic police have BMW M5's

Surprised they were chasing them at that speed. Normally they'd be called off for being too dangerous.

I'm surprised there wasn't a TT or ACA van in the midst, trying to get some more footage for their next Hoon Driver story.

Seriously though, not suprised that the police weren't able to quite easily catch and stop a VR SS considering that every cop I see is driving a crap box Omega or VY wagon. Not to mention that there are probably more performance enhanced VR SS's on the road than not. |

The SA highway patrol used to have a couple of SS VZ Commodores, but I'm not so sure they have replaced them with V8s again.
The rest of the SA fleet is Omegas. Now they are phasing in the 3.0 SIDI they will catch nothing.

Out of interest, is there a reason why the majority of police vehicles are base models and not V8s?
For every VE SV6 police car I see, I probably see 10 VE Omegas with rims that would probably fall off if the car went over 80km/h. Funding? |

The chap in the VR has one priority.. escape. He would not give a toss who is in the way, what laws are broken in doing so and whatever worst case scenario could arise from his actions. The police on the other hand has 2 priorities.. getting the chap in the VR, but trying to do so in as safe a manner as possible, seeing as the safety of the innocent public around the chase are as much, if not more of a priority than getting the bad guy. Vehicle grunt has little to do with it. Why are many chases like this called off?... certainly not because the cop cars were not up to the task by being underpowered. |

SAPOL allegedly have no V8s in their fleet at all at this point. I haven't seen a VZ cop car for some time now either, and with the VE being launched back in 06 and the average Fleet SA lease being 3 years it makes sense.
Personally, I'd like to see some high visibility Highway cars much like the XR6Ts I saw in Canberra for the Summernats, something other than Adelaide Taxi White.

There is no way a 140-odd kW VR V8 Commodore could outrun a VE V6 Commodore - are they over 200kW now anyway? Besides the VR would use more oil than fuel and we all know the trans sucks.
Catching up to the crim with an über powerful car or the alleged special driver training they're claimed to be equipped with, is irrelivant. You can't STOP another car by being on his tail - you can spin him out of control, likely causing a roll-over and potential fatality for crim or others; but outside America we choose not to do this. Too often the crim might use the proximity of chasing officers as an excuse for their speed, pressure applied in addition to trying to get away makes the situation for other road users worse. It would be nice if they could get in front and clamp down this car you saw hooning around much sooner, but having a more powerfull police car won't have any effect on this. Once the chase reaches a certain speed, or crosses into oncomming traffic, its "called off" immediately. Which is not to suggest the police give up like in GTA or NFS, they keep following just not pursuing so the pressure on the crim is off, the danger for others is reduced, and between other surrounding patrols and the helicopter they'll get them soon enough. Which is why the chase in Whyalla described above could well have had cop cars with sirens driving around for ages - but they weren't at full speed behind them until they crash and kill a bunch of people. Its not a perfect science, but it makes sense, don't you think?

I can't understand why SA police would send 9 police cars after one guy in a VR. Surely this would have made the Advertiser? I didn't see anything. What suburb was it in ibrox?
