Got the recorder set for it tonight...should be awesome.
I don't see it as a an "extreme sports event"...there's going to be heaps of science going on during the attempt testing various things like the new type of suit he's wearing. Call it a "science experiment" and people won't tune in...call it an "extreme sports event" and people will tune in by the thousand to check it out and see the sponsors logo. Clever. |

Nothing new, the USAF were doing this in the 50s & 60s.
Hehe, I still remember one guy (forget his name) had his hand expand to twice its normal size due to lower pressures. His suit had an air leak As 2011G6E said, people will flock to a "science experiment" if a corporate logo is strapped to his ar$e.... |

Aah I've been waiting for this for a while.
Although I did have to have a chuckle at all the tech and implied awesomeness of this feat (not that it isnt awesome, don't get me wrong) when Joe Kittinger did this in 1960! Albeit from 31,000 metres.

Kittingers exploits were amazing, and this takes nothing away from them...but the Red Bull guy is doing it from four or five kilometers further up.
That might not seem like much, but it makes a simply staggering difference when you're talking those altitudes. It's been said that if the Earth was the size of a normal globe like you would see in a classroom, then one coat of varnish would represent the thickness of the atmosphere...amazing stuff. |

It seems that the weather was no good for launching the balloon.
"At this stage the mission team is closely monitoring possible new launch days before a green light is given for another countdown. Progress will be communicated as it happens."

The material the balloon is made out of is amazing...no wonder they didn't want to take off in a stiff breeze...the stuff is gossamer-thin and looks like it would tear if you looked at it wrong.

I sort of hope this Baumgartner doesn't get the record as i think Joe Kittinger's achievements are far greater than Baumgartners. Kittinger did his jump not knowing what would happen as he lept from such a height and using almost antiquated equipment. His glove failed on the way up but he didn't tell his engineer for fear they would stop the jump. Kittinger sat in an open gondola and was doing so as an experiment to see the effects of the human body in space and was simply doing his job! It is still the coolest thing i have ever seen!
