So at the start of the year the MRS and i had three cars. my VY Clubsport (modified), GQ patrol and her ford laser. We decided that it was stupid to have three cars and sold the VY clubby and the laser and got a FG XR6 turbo for her to use as a daily and for our long drives to Melbourne. I instantly missed the clubby, the sound of the V8 and the manual trans. I thought the FG turbo would fill the void but it really didn't, don't get me wrong i love the turbo but i feel it is missing character. I don't find it "fun" to drive even though it has been tuned to 290rwkw.
Now i am thinking of selling the FG and the GQ to get back into a manual V8. I would need to buy the MRS a new buzz box and then get myself a BF XR8 or something around the 15-20 grand mark. The only thing is that i have spent upwards of $10,000 on the GQ, it is finally how i want it, I love 4x4ing. I just feel i can't justify it anymore as we are not using it a lot. Oh and i am a ford fan, had a BA XR8 before the clubby, the clubby was just an amzing car for the money back when i bought it. So my question is, what would you do? Three cars is out of the question, we live in an apartment and already rent a parking space for the falcon. Am i being crazy for even considering this? |

Honestly, I'd put a V8 in the GQ and get out on the tracks and doing trips more! A V8 in the bush is the best sound of all.

Gotta agree with Mr.Grinzy, putting V8 in GQ in is the best thing ever, mate of mine has mine and it is a beast of a thing...
Why not get your missus use the Falcon and you drive the GQ?? |

Already do that mate, missus uses the falcon as her daily, use the GQ some weekends, i ride my pushy to work. We bought the falcon so i still have a fast car to use but i don't find it engaging at all. The power is nice but that's about it. I'm finding it hard to justify as its a lot of car to have, especially when im not enjoying it. missus couldn't care less about it, i mean she likes it but the turbo doesn't mean anything to her. We cant get a V8 as a daily as i want a manual and it didnt work with the mrs trying to use the clubby as a daily (that was a manual) she just doesnt like it.

If all you want is the V8 rumble, the fun factor and the rush, and if you're happy to give up the 4x4'ing why not sell off the GQ and go find a sub 10k AUII-III XR8 to play with as a weekender and keep the FG as the missus daily and the long haul cruiser. An AU won't have the outright straight line grunt of the newer fords but they can hold their own in the twistys, they handle better than a B series with a more tactile feel and should give you the fun factor you're looking for.

Thats a great idea mate, just had a look on carsales and you can get a very clean manual AU for 10grand now. Such an annoying decision, 3 cars was so much easier.

Sell the FG, then for sound effects buy the AU V8 or a VN-S with a strong 355 in it on the cheap. Buy the "Mrs" a new Fiesta ST (really you'll buy it for yourself once you drive it) and you have everything covered. Sound and handling and no an AU doesn't handle well... maybe compared to a B series which are about as agile as an oil tanker

Why not a manual FG turbo mate? I got bored with my auto as well, manual straight away got me back interested in the car. Plus I bet you'll miss the huge drop in power more then you do the noise of a v8.

I wish mate, that's what I wanted. I had to compromise with the missus as its her daily. She didn't want a bigger car and if we got a falcon it had to be auto. It's too big of a car for her to stuff around with the manual as well. Basically have to sell the GQ if I want something I like again, and sell the FG as well. |

Trade the missus?
But I meant FG manual for you and maybe upgrade hers with any change left over from GQ.

Spoke to the missus about, she doesn't really care what i do so long as she has a nice car, so would get something around $15 g for her. See how this summer goes with the GQ here in Canberra, if i don't use it once a month it is gone. |

Have you considered a T3 TES50/TS50? You could get a decent one for the money you're talking.

So after much thought it looks like we will sell the Falcon and get something nice for the MRS while the falcon is still worth something. Will spend around $15000 or so on the MRS car. We plan to have kids in the next year and a half so we will sell the GQ then and i will buy a BF GT for myself, a car i have always wanted.
The MRS and i have spoken about it and seem to think this is the best way to go, too much money being tied up in the falcon when i don't enjoy it at all. |
