My BF I6 has the K&N flat style replacement filter fitted and I hav'nt washed and re oiled it since i've owned the car (15,000k's).
Just wondering whats the best solution to wash the filter in? Hot soapy water? Or maybe some petrol or carbie cleaner in a spray can??? ALso I'm pretty sure i can buy the replacement filter oil from somehwere like Autobarn yeh??? |

Go buy a K&N "recharge kit" its a pack that contains the oil and the wash. Yes you can get it at Autobarn and Repco and probably Supercheap etc. I've washed mine at least 10 times with this wash (filter has done over 200000kms in my car).
Hot soapy water wont cut it, i know i tried. You basically need a degreaser since its coated in oil.

You'll most likely trash it if you wash it in petrol of carby cleaner, I've done mine a few times and I use the K&N filter cleaning kit which I find does an awesome job.

Ive used a very soapy hot water solution and find it works great.
Need something strong like truck wash thats quite alkaline mix it up nice n soapy with hot water. Let it soak for a good while so it dissolves the grime and loosens up nicely then swish it up n down through the water so it pushes out all the dirt. Dont use petrol or any solvents. But do use the recommended K+N filter oil a few light coats will let the oil have time to soak into the filter

Genuine k and n recharge kit is about $30 roughly, make sure you get the spray on oil and not the squeezy bottle.
Let it drip dry in the shade so the gauze doesn't degrade in the sun, will most likely take overnight to dry. |

I use a kero bath first. Then once pretty dry rinse in a kero bath with about 50mm of engine oil in it. wait till it "drys" off and all done. Cost about $10 and can be used again and again.

Easiest way is to just replace it with an OEM paper filter. Done.
Couldn't be bothered with K&N air filters any more. They don't do much anyway except make more induction noise. |

I use a light spray of degreaser and rinse with water. Then dry it off with the air gun, and oil with air tool oil.

I bought one a few weeks ago for $20 at Autobahn. Apparently that is the new price for them.

However, my hopefully helpful advice which I haven't seen mentioned yet clearly here, is that it is imperative to make sure the filter is rinsed from the clean (top) side, so the dirt goes back out from the side it came, and not forced through the filter. I use the K&N cleaner that works well. |

If someone were not overly fussed about filters and wasn't chasing any performance (installing a k&n will not yield and noticeable increase in power) I would recommend the paper filter as it is much easier to renew. When cleaning you must be sure to remove all debris and also make sure it is 100% dry to make sure the debris doesn't get sucked through the engine. When 're oiling you must make sure you don't over oil it otherwise you will suck up heaps of oil into the intake or under oil it otherwise dirt will go straight through. I can see why the paper filter is better in some cases. |

Stinky Ninja must be off his meds today.
I use the standard recharge kit. No dramas here at all.

Absolutely.
OP, the instructions are on the recharge pack. Follow them and you are sweet. Only thing is I ran out of oil about 3 washes short of the cleaner. So I went ahead and bought a bigger can of oil, it was a little more than a new recharge kit. Both cleaner and oil can be bought separately. This thread has reminded me that I need to do mine.

CAUTION; THE USE OF ANY OTHER DRYING METHODS (IE. COMPRESSED AIR, DRYER HEATERS, HEAT GUNS) COULD DAMAGE FILTER. If you look closely at the filter construction, you can see why it would damage the filter. |
