Does anyone know if the XR4 2L engine will work on the WQ 1.6L gearbox? I know the gear ratios are different between the 1.6L gearbox and the 2L gearbox

While removal and installation steps are different, they are both IB6 transmissions so it shouldn't require a lot of work to make it fit.
The ratios are significantly different: 1.6L is 3.15 / 1.93 / 1.28 / 0.95 / 0.76 with a 4.42 final drive. The 2L is 3.58 / 2.04 / 1.41 / 1.11 / 0.88 with a 3.82 final drive.

No, sorry, it won't.
The 2.0 is a Mazda L series engine and uses that bell housing pattern. The 1.6 is a Sigma engine and has a different bell housing. The transmissions are similar - the Sigma engines use the IB5 and IB6 transmissions, which continued on to the ST180 1.6 Ecoboost and I think also the current 1.5. The L engines in the XR4 use the IB5+ transmission which has the unique bell housing for the L series Mazda engines. The IB5+ is the weakest link in the XR4 and the transmissions are prone to failure - mainly the differential, which when it goes splits the case and kills the trans for good. The are no other known applications of the IB5+ transmission with a L duratec. Combine the rareness with the fragility, and used working IB5+ gearboxes are worth a pretty penny. A few people are able to get an LSD in them with stronger gearing before they self-detinate and get a lot more life out of them. There's also a sequential IB5+ sold out of England - if you are super keen. Hence why, while there are some compromises, getting a Focus MTX75 transmission into an XR4 is a cheaper option, as it is a much stronger gearbox, and can be found for about $200. It just needs some customisations which can cost a little bit, but is still less than an IB5+ where the cheapest box I've seen is around $600. Luke
