Default SBS and ADs

whats up with SBS putting ads into their programs?
seems they have taken the 'comercial TV' route and decided to put ads IN programs unlike they used to do which was every half hour or at the end of the program.

any one know what the reasoning is?

I believe I take more interest in the commercials that are on between shows than the ones during. That way you can really get into the shows without getting interrupted (IMHO it stuffs up South Park, a show I've never watched until tonight with ads in it)

SBS as of 2 months ago got permission to run adds in the middle of there TV shows.
Before they were only allowed to show commercials at the end of there programs, apparently its still the same amount of add time as aired as before all they have done is moved them around.

Even worse.. I saw a Myer ad on the comedy channel the other day.. I'm pretty sure we don't pay for ads on our TV... More ads that are promoting their own channel/other pay channels have being getting more and more common lately, but normal ads from free TV on pay? Bugger off.

An excpetion to the general rule.

Ads in the middle of a show are much more valuable (a reasonable person could therefore conclude they are more effective) than those in between programs.

Valuable to the tune of an additional $10 million for SBS in the first 12 months. It's a question of viability.

Ads still limted to 5 mins/hour compared with 15 mins/hour for 7, 9 and 10.

There is still questions surrounding the legality. There's legislation specific to the SBS which dictates what they can and cant do. Particularly relating to ads... its not evident that they're actually allowed to advertise during shows... but i guess that's for the lawyers to figure out.

I've found that SBS and ABC are the two best stations because they have the balls to show programs that others won't.

7, 9 and 10 are too busy squabbling over bloody ratings and crap like that. Of course, 10 are never a chance to win ratings because they show all that "reality tv" garbage that has guaranteed that I'll spend more time scratching my bottom instead.

No, I like SBS and ABC. Their shows are more for those with an idea.

I think its ok to have a few adds, they only have like 3 of them at a time, unlike the other stations which seem to run 28457354million at a time lol.

My sentiments exactly....."I cannot and will not" watch or engage in commercial television for exactly the same reason as I do not put myself through self harm by listening to commercial radio.........it's all absolutely appalling tripe, "ads or not",.....this is why I pretty much have a PC, every night I go on the PC why the wife watches every bit of coma enducing secreted garbage she can possibly find on the television.....the only shows worth watching are always on either SBS or ABC........how anyone puts themselves through watching most of the programming on commercial television or radio airplay for that matter is completely beyond me.

Dude that's a mighty fine high horse you're riding on there.

You may see 7, 9 and 10's programming as appealing to the lowest common denominator. But that would imply that you think you know better than the millions of people who enjoy watching these channels, and i know no one would sit there and say such a thing.

So whilst the programming offered on these channels may not meet your intellectual or moral standards - why not lay off the arrogance dial just a bit.

And try not to look too far down your nose at us plebs.

"Oh Dear Oh Dear......someone’s put their favourite white frilly knickers in the wash with their red socks or something", only joking,........."oh well here goes, as I no doubt as frivolous and fruitless exercise as this may prove to be, one must try and answer such criticisms.
Firstly, I do not ride upon a high horse and look down upon anyone as you so admirably put it, in my dealings I come into contact with people from all walks of life whom of course have endless and unlimited views, opinions and tastes on all subject matter, in both my professional and private life I at all times show restraint in remaining completely unbiased toward any number of individuals and their personal opinions, anyone who knows me I can assure you would give testament to this fact.
Secondly, I do not see anyone who engages in choosing to consume the products of the mainstream commercial networks, television or radio, as, and I quote ..."the lowest common denominator", if you actually revisit my initial post you would see that indeed I quote my own "wife" as being one such individual. You have and quite rightly so pointed out that millions of such persons do in fact enjoy the content supplied by said networks, Australia as do many other countries choose to operate on a ratings system, the viewing/listening numbers tell the tale, albeit unfortunately a fairly loose and subjective one. I was in fact initially simply trying to point out that I "personally" choose not to partake in such offerings, not because as you wish to imply I believe that I am above all others in any way, shape or form, but simply because there is rarely anything on those networks that I wish to view/listen to,..... if you do, then that's your perogative, you are but one of the millions of people you so aptly point out enjoy their shows, at 25 years of age of course this is perhaps not so surprising, you are directly in the target audience age group that the big commercial networks are targeting, you may well enjoy such products as "Big Brother", "Australian Idol" or "Funniest Home Videos",........but I don't, I am simply not one of those millions who do, you may at your age think that Britney Spears latest single is a revelation and turning point in the history of recorded music?......the young lady is very well off......obviously someone partakes in her product range......are you one of those people?........but then you miss the point altogether,....... "who cares?",....... we are all different and we all like different things and as we grow older our experiences and life balances change our view of the world around us and hence our personal tastes are all but one of the myriad of things that change with us as individuals, I have dealings with many young people around your age that have all manner of different tastes and opinions, this does not change my view of any one of them on any personal level, I need and respect each and every one of them,.........I certainly don't look down on them as "plebs".........I am perceiving that in reading the general "hostility" and "tone" of your reply post I have perhaps hit a raw nerve on your chipped shoulder, I don't know who you are or indeed what are your personal circumstances in this "game we call life,"..... bad relationship with someone?, hate your job?, your boss is a complete lunatic?, your car broke down today?......who knows, hope you get over it and all works out in the end........" because of course it usually does, certainly not worth worrying about or getting in a stew over,".....Rob.

Someone so articulate usually has much better paragraph structure! lol.

Certainly appreciate your comments there. Perhaps the initial post could have been elaborated on. No need to address your concerns individually, but i think it's suffice to say that comments from your intial post, such as:

"how anyone puts themselves through watching most of the programming on commercial television or radio airplay for that matter is completely beyond me"

"it's all absolutely appalling tripe"

"coma enducing secreted garbage" <- that's a fantastic phrase by the way.

Suggests that you're expressing something a little stronger than your decision to 'not partake in such offerings'.... there is undoubtedly a strong element of judgement (of both the medium and the audience) there, im suprised you've attempted to backpedal from such a stance. However, a fine job you have done

For what its worth, I agree with your views on commercial TV (but more so - commercial radio). But yes - being in a key demographic, i do find myself enduced into the occasional coma.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have a Britney Spears DVD to watch before Oprah comes on.

"Much better paragraph structure"....agreed,..... but this is of course a public Internet forum, not a formal letter to the PM, create only what is indeed required for said particular occasion.
Perhaps further elaboration would have been initially required as you so favourably point out, yes indeed, there is a strong element of judgement in my words ("as there usually is from me"), although in this instance targeted at the content and it's perpetrators......certainly not the audience for they to a large degree know no different, this is because unfortunately we now live in a media saturated world that dictates to the masses what we must watch, listen, consume, believe or even to a large degree, think,.... so called "celebrities" achieve almost a god like status.......that is for so long as they are the latest "darlings" of the media barons and their enclaves, this is simply a world I do not endear myself to and as such do not participate in, my world is so very different to this.
Understand Martin, I choose to use this particular forum and other pursuits of relaxation as an escape from my other world, I will not ask my skeletons in the closet to "come out and play" for this is a very public place but suffice to say I "backpedal" from nothing,...... "I don't need, nor ever have to", perhaps I was just gently letting you off the hook......"it has been known to happen occasionally", I may not be formally university educated as you yourself are, but the streets of London's West End taught me all I need know in life, and perhaps very much more.
Yes, my "arrogance dial" can be tuned rather on the high side at times, forgive me for sometimes I lose sense of which hat I am currently wearing.
I perceive your last reply as being somewhat more relaxed and perhaps friendlier than your prior attempt,...... I deduct from this that I will not be required to get up at dawn, select my weapon of choice and march ten paces shall I?......perhaps a simple nod and gentlemanly hand shake would be more the order of the day......I wish you the best of luck and care young Martin, remember one can always fall off a ladder....particularly as I understand it, a corporate one,...... it's a long and dangerous climb to the summit of Everest....but then that's nothing compared to the reaching the top of the world you indeed are trying to conquer......all the best with it, Rob.

Ads during shows are OK when you want to get up and get a drink or go to the toilet so you don't miss anything. As long as they don't go for anymore than a minute.

The advertisers are willing to pay more money if there adds are placed in the middle of the show, its all about raising revenue.

Its a win-win, SBS hold their audience and the advertisers get better exposure.

Tried watching the Rugby League test match tonight on channel 9......gave up after about half an hour,....... "we'll be right back after the break", followed by a long block of non stop ads!!, couldn't get into the game at all, what a farce.
