Thumbs up Mercedes Introduces SLR "722 Edition"

Named to honor British racing legend Stirling Moss' and co-driver Denis Jenkinson's victory at the Mille Miglia in 1955, a race won by a Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR with starting number 722, the SLR 722 Edition features a supercharged 5.5-Liter V8 producing 478kW/650 horsepower, as opposed to the standard SLR's 460kW/626 horsepower. The result is a supercar capable of accelerating from 0-62 mph in a mere 3.6 seconds (standard SLR: 3.8 seconds), 0-124 mph in 10.2 seconds (standard SLR: 10.6 seconds), and achieving a top speed of 209.4 mph (standard SLR: 207.5 mph).

In addition to the power enhancements, the new SLR 722 Edition also features a number of other tweaks as well. Nineteen-inch light-alloy wheels, a stiffer damper configuration, a ten-millimeter reduction in height, larger brake discs, and a modified front spoiler and rear diffuser all reflect subtle hints this isn't a typical Mercedes SLR McLaren.

Very nice...but they would also charge a ridiculous price for it.

Given the price, I'd rather get a house and land.

Or I'd put the money into restoring an older Falcon...if I had the brains and skill that is...

But it would sure fly.

Never liked the look of the SLR. Still don't like the look of the slightly tarted up SLR special.

Part of the design, the manufacture at their Paragon facility. The car came in overweight and over budget (it was originally going to cost less, the performance figures were so good that they bumped the price up), this is a special to try and get them out the door. Mercedes did the initial concept car and McLaren had to make it work. Criticised for the supercharged engine not being powerful enough and the steering/brakes being a bit weird. You get the feeling that Merc and McL would’ve done things differently if they had’ve both had free hands. Future Merc supercars are rumoured to be design/construct with AMG. McL has gone quiet on their planned trio of production cars too.

Have a look at the cooling slats at the front and you can see why carbon fibre and exhaust heat doesn’t work well – they had to exhaust out of the side/front rather than run a hot length of exhaust pipework to the rear.

The best part of the SLR is the sound of the engine. There was one on Top Gear and the sound of it's supercharged V8 was just brilliant

Very nice. A guy I used to work with traded his porsche 986 and wife's AMG to get an SL65. The thing is an absolute weapon. Makes me want to buy another Merc...
